Problem with rankings is they are uniformly distributed but the data behind them is normally distributed. Rankings are not a valid way to compare because of this.

You've given a good reason why you can't brag about being #5 when another team is #10, but when all of the top 10 offenses but one are ranked 30 or worse in defense (and vice versa) the data is still instructive.

Ranking teams based on opinion is not the same as taking normally distributed data and trying to compare it based on the ranking of said data.

The only stats that count are the scoreboard & the win/loss record.

My point is that while there may be little statistical difference between 5th in total offense and 10th in total offense, the distinction gets more meaningful when you're talking about 5th in total offense vs. 30th in total offense.

And I'd agree with you. I wanted to see Wisconsin vs Bama in the title game.
