Sucks though in a way because that means we won't be expanding lane anytime soon....

Yeah i was hoping we would redo the north but a bigger scoreboard will help keep sound in and make it louder

Nice. That is a big ass screen. I don't think our big screen is competitive anymore. Not after cowboys stadium.

We've had a bit of a face lift ourselves this off-season.

Who's idea was it to put a picture of Logan getting tackled on the screen? They really couldn't find a better pic?!?!

It's about time they upgraded Hokie Vision again. Hopefully this round its not outdated the day they install it.

Lane isn't expanding anytime soon. Attendance at peer schools is wavering, and the home schedule has too many soft spots. We need to stay the course: Keep supply a tad low and require donations for the right to buy tickets. Barring an explosion in demand, Tech can probably stand to wait until the NEZ stands reach their design life.

All i had heard was VT was not going to even think about making any changes to the stadium until 2013 so it appears that the scoreboard is that change. I dont think they would spend big money on a scoreboard to remove it in a few years to rebuild the north stands unless they wrap the stands around the scoreboard.

I would assume the scoreboard could always be taken down and then put back up as part of an expansion project. Not that I expect an expansion any time soon.

No stadium expansions on the north side will be done until the indoor practice facility is complete. If they expanded the north end zone, a good portion, if not all of one of the practice fields would be gone. And two fields are needed to run a full practice.

Lane's screen should be nice but I may be more excited for Cassell. That place needs a major overhaul so nice LED screens is a move in the right direction

Do you know what that is?

For some reason I thought it was 2015, but I'm not sure

{I'm not a structural engineer but} Based on materials and similar structures, I've estimated there is a 20-30 year initial design life for the structure. That basically means we can pretty much leave it alone and it'll remain in good structural condition. After that you reevaluate. So 2020 would be the perfect time for a new structure if demand is there.

Keep in mind it probably will be physically capable of staying up much longer, if engineers find it to be in good shape. It's not too terribly different than you'll see at RIR( or Martinsville Speedway) which replaces parts of the seats and metal platforms as needed, but can reconfigure if desire is there (RIR reconfigured it's entire track in the late 80s).

In any event, if the NEZ was replaced with a concrete structure, the cost to relocate the new HokieVision would be a relatively small cost to that project, so no worries about that. Expanding the steel structure would make the new screen a noticable cost, but not a deal breaker IMO. It think there could be some creative ways to expand the steel stands without moving the screen too.

I really hope that you're right...

USC's new (last year) scoreboard is 36x124. I really hope that 108' number isn't a diagonal. Clemson just got all new video/audio upgrades too, I really hope VT doesn't cheap out on this.

Look at the pdf linked under the tweet int he first post. Page 51. It has the dimensions drawn. The screen is 108'x48'. Other dimensions are shown on the following pages
