Gosh, there can't be anything more worrying and frustrating than that. If that is true, it's a career in the books. Just too dangerous. Scariest part is the most recent hit was just a hockey play...something that happens in the game.

Yeah his career is over. I can't imagine doctors are going to keep giving him the green light to play.

That's a bummer. Part of the game at times, but can't be easy to take if it's you it's happening to.

I played against Marc in minor hockey. He wasn't a particularly good player back then, nor was he very smart.

That being said he OBVIOUSLY grew as a player. This is bad news. Savvy is a prime example of a late bloomer who worked hard to become not only a an NHLer but a star. I hope this goes away so he can resume his career. I'm not optimistic though.

ON a side note I got one of my 2 concussions in a game in which I played against Marc. He had nothing to do with it.

Good thing Cooke didnt get suspended on that play.

Im sure you all read this.

Former NFL Player Commits Suicide, Donates Brain to Science | Playbook

Individuals with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy may show symptoms of dementia such as memory loss, aggression, confusion and depression which may appear within months of the trauma or many decades later.

not saying this is what Savard is going to go through but all pro sports with contact need to remember this.

all the best to savard.

I mean, the current symptoms are part of post-concussion syndrome...but yeah, he's on that pathway. Which is scary.

sorry yes. I meant that to be my message. Im glad you got it :).

its incredibly worrisome for players at all levels as well. my friend used to play on my hockey team. he got a elbow to the head that didnt seem terrible. 3 games later he got an even lighter elbow to the head from the same fucking team and that one sent him to the doctor. he can never play hockey again because of post concussion. Ive never seen him more confused in daily things when I talk to him. its very concerning.

Yeah, dealing with those symptoms of it is just depressing. Seeing young men and women fall victim to the costs of old age just seems wrong. Your friend is lucky to be alive though...one of the biggest things that you have to worry about with concussions is second impact syndrome. If you play with a concussion and then sustain another blow to the head you can get this. It has a 50% survival rate...and those who survive can't live alone ever again. It's heartbreaking. That's why it is imperative that athletes TELL someone when they have first symptoms. It doesn't take much to kill someone.

Sidenote: the nurse who cleared him, well she angers me. BUT, that speaks volumes to the issue of concussions throughout the medical field. Medical professionals close to athletics, the ones who see it daily, know the symptoms and know that you can't freaking PLAY with them. However, those in the general field don't care about it as long as it isn't a bleed of some sort. I've heard countless stories of ATs taking athletes to the ER and being told it's "nothing really, just a fancy word for a bump to the head" *vomit*

Huh, well, I guess you can only sustain it if your brain is still forming, so Savvy is clear from that...but a lot of players in the NHL aren't, knowing the youth movement. *Glares at Sid*

shit ended my playing career, its really frustrating. i still have spurts where i studder a lot.

its hard to come to terms with the fact that realistically whats going on is you're brain isn't working correctly

That's maybe the biggest (well...probably second behind athletes telling the trainer) issue with concussions and athletes. You can't just rehab this. It's NOT like a sprained ankle. You can work hard and get through an ACL tear when it's time to rehab, but a concussion is all about luck. Some people are more adept to getting them, some aren't. But if you get one, all you can do is wait it out and hope it heals. It kills me to see the athlete's polls saying they'd rather get a concussion than hurt their knee. Clearly they don't realize the ramifications that come with a concussion.
