I'd guess that for something like a sport, especially a televised sport, because the more popular it is, the more it will be shown and the more a fan gets to watch.
Used to be, you could only watch the NFL on Sundays. Now, it's Sunday, Monday, Thursday and later in the season...some Saturdays.
I can remember when NBA finals games that were played on a weeknight, were shown on tape delay at 11:30pm.
