I was never into the games, and I never watched (was never even tempted) the first 2 movies.

But who is the target audience? Current kids, or men in their 30s/40s?

These movies are for kids.

Jim Carrey totally hijacked the first movie. So you have an otherwise pretty average kids movie with Jim Carrey being somewhat funny in Jim Carrey ways which appeals to the parents.

I haven't seen the second movie but I suspect they'll keep making these movies as long as they make money. Although the arc of one of the two main people at SEGA behind Sonic back in the day actually split off to do other things so maybe they instead focus on other Sega IPs into movies.
