I have read a number of comments from players angry over the fact that the top free agents are not signed therefore blaming the owners for not spending. They are seemingly threatening a mid season strike.
My take; could it be that since attendance is and has been dropping that the owners are making an attempt to save the sport from collapse by controlling the escalating salaries. It is a fact that the top players have been offered contracts however their agents want more and are holding out. At the same time they are spreading discontent by blaming the owners instead of accepting the excessive contracts currently on the table.
I blame the agents and to a lesser degree the players but if the players strike...im I out and I believe the sport continues the downward spiral.

A strike at the All Star break until September would be perfect.

Teams would have to refund games not played to season ticket holders, millions of dollars in lost concession revenue and millions of dollars lost in baseball stuff not purchased every day by people going to the parks.

What the hell are players thinking?? Sorry, most are high school athletes that got passed along by teachers who didn't give a rat shit. Undereducated and cutting their own throats.........sounds about right. Make the owners lose money so they'll pay players more.....makes perfect sense to me.

Baseball is making more money than ever (plus the sell of bamtech).

The owners are absolutely flush with cash.

And spending less on players than previous years.

If there’s a salary ceiling like these draconian tax rules, then there’s needs to be a floor about 20-30m below the first threshold.

Millionaires striking because the Billionaires are treating them wrong. There is something fundamentally wrong with this. $ 30 Mil per year to play a game we all played when we were kids, I would do it for free if I still could.

But you can't, and that's sort of the point. It's a highly skilled job where superior athletes have to put in year round work to succeed at it. Ticket prices go up, revenue goes up, but players shouldn't get it because it's only robber barons that can get the right piece of a pie.

Owners take all the risks. Players never miss a meal. Agents work out the deals and so on. I don't see a problem!

You’re asking for mlb chaos. I’d like to watch 162 games this year if I want to.

MLB players are all pissed off that no one will offer Muchado or Harper a 5 year $400M contract. They're screaming collusion. I'm not asking for anything, the MLB players are demanding that someone break the $325M barrier that Stanton got. Between the NBA and MLB, the contracts are getting a bit ridiculous. Seriously, $30M to play 80 basketball games? or 162 baseball games?? A game lasts what? 3 hours? There comes a point where the demands don't reach a value of what the money is beig paid for.

I think we've reached the point of diminishing return.

The math says you’re wrong. A win is worth close to 10m per year. So a 5 win Machado is worth about 50m per year in value

I misinterpreted your original post. I agree that these huge stratospheric contracts are outrageous and that players calling for a strike is insane. I suppose, as I said in another thread, that the signing delays had the owners involved.

I think the owners have to be involved a little because player contracts can exceed the cost of their stadium. CBP cost $458 million in 2004. Pay Harper $400 million? I can see a bidding war where guys are paid a few million more every few years, but contracts are jumping ahead by 10s of millions.

Maybe there should be a maximum contract value of, e.g., $200M/10 years, with all bids on a free agent limited to some acceptable percentage value increase like 10%, and agreed to by both sides. No team could offer more than $220M/10 years. Damn, sound like socialism. I have no answer.

Unfortunately the answer is for people to stop going and watching, we know that won't happen.

A strike or lockout would do that for everyone.

Baseball would be destroyed and probably fall behind hockey.

Never. I have lived thru a few baseball strikes. People boycott for a short time and then they go back.

These actions are becoming increasing close to killing the golden goose and the tipping point would be for all fans to boycott this madness and these overpaid babies and their owners with too much money need a wake-up call that they are getting into a pissing match with each other at the behest of the fans. So we should exercise our Constitutionally protected rights to not watch baseball and contribute more money to the mess.

Just heard that Manny Muchado signed a 10 year $300M contract with San Diego Padres today.

Announcer said that the Padres are not done and will make a bigger offer to Bryce Harper.

Harper will not sign with the Phillies! Repeat--Will not! Who wants to go to the plate with an index card in his pocket
saying when to swing and what to swing at? He will sign for less to go with another team to stay away from Flex!
This is only my opinion, but I feel strong bout it!

You’re ruining my day. For once, Phillies FO needs to make an intelligent, proactive decision. :martini:
