"We'll start with the subject of more than a few questions on the board this summer: Eddie Lacy and his recovery from surgery to repair his toe.
Two program insiders indicate Lacy's comeback from the injury is going extremely well. "He may have to drop a few pounds from the inactivity, but health-wise, he should be fine," one said.
Alabama's leading returning rusher, of course, missed the entirety of spring drills following January surgery to resolve a painful turf toe condition that limited him over the last two-thirds of the 2011 season. A lot has gone into Lacy's recovery, from physical therapy to a custom pair of cleats he's expected to wear this year.
A full-speed Lacy in fall camp would allow the UA staff far more flexibility at the position than it had in the spring. For one, it would mean a better opportunity for the staff to give Blake Sims another look at quarterback. All indications are that Sims will get some camp action under center as part of a spirited but youthful competition to settle the quarterback pecking order behind AJ McCarron at the position. The question is whether or not he can stick there. Remember, the same experiment was tried last year, but was then put into deep-freeze.
Another potential experiment -- although not believed to be as likely as the Sims move -- is Jalston Fowler at the H-back spot. He's got more than enough size and athletic ability to handle the role. While Fowler was effective from the backfield last year, sources indicate he might be able to give the offense more valuable snaps from the H than he could at running back. Stay tuned on that.
T.J. Yeldon's potential as a member of the backfield rotation, along with Lacy's health and Dee Hart's continued development, will have something to do with how much the staff can play with the idea of trying another back at a different position.
*** Speaking of McCarron, he'll be making his second appearance at the Manning Passing Academy later this summer. Greg McElroy was a two-timer at that camp before McCarron. Word is, McCarron's invitation for his second go-round came straight from the legendary Archie Manning.
Buzz from summer workouts:
*** Tidesports.com sources indicate Eddie Williams has been extremely impressive at wide receiver. He's the biggest receiver out there and is running and cutting like some of the smallest, sources indicate. What's more about Williams, he's been one of two summer enrollees who have especially stood out from a preparation standpoint. He's asking questions, he dived head first into the playbook, and unlike a lot of elite receiver recruits, he's been very humble as well.
*** The other enrollee who has stood out for his preparation? Quarterback Alec Morris. Word is, he recognizes the No.2 quarterback job as the wide-open competition that it truly is. Like Williams, his nose has really been in the book.
*** Naturally, not every incoming signee is going to set the world on fire in summer workouts. They don't always show up in great shape. One who is said to have his work cut out for him from a conditioning standpoint is defensive lineman Korren Kirvin.
*** Other freshmen sources have mentioned have looked sharp in summer workouts: Kenyan Drake, Chris Black, Landon Collins and Amari Cooper. ... Collins' name came up with almost everyone we spoke to, as did Williams. ... We get reports of Yeldon looking a little bigger since the end of spring, and we're talking about the good kind of weight. ... Morris is said to be looking the part physically as well.
*** Sources indicate lineman Brandon Hill is indeed still working academically to get enrolled, and is taking some online classwork to get eligible. No word yet on whether Hill figures to join the team for Summer II in July or in August when classes start. Given Hill's late arrival and Alabama's depth on the offensive line, Hill figures to be among the more likely candidates to redshirt.
*** And finally, a little SEC buzz. ... If you paid enough attention to Ole Miss football last year, you were no doubt aware that Nick Brassell was too much bullet for the Ole Miss offensive gun. A big-time receiver with nothing close to a big-time quarterback. ?The former Alabama recruit has landed at East Mississippi Community College, and word is, he may play both ways for EMCC, adding some duty at corner. Not suggesting he's necessarily still on Alabama's radar, but don't be surprised to see him back in the SEC at some point, or at the very least, back at a four-year school. "
