So we are staying in the 3-4, so a NT is the #1 priority

I know. IM just looking at this as... really?? REALLY??

We better get an NT capable of actually playing NT or this could get Sha' Nay Nay ugly real fast.

Is Williams the best candidate probably? Poe would be nice but will cost a fortune. Perhaps we actually invest money into the DL for once?

DE = Baker
NT = Poe or Williams
DE= 1st round pick or Lawrence Guy

That DL would help me sleep at night a little better. Pricey...but we would no longer have a DL of human matadors.

Lastly, does Cravens stay at hybrid LB or move to SS?

IF we are going to really stay a 3-4, i would not be apposed to this D-line.

I will say this, as long as we bring in the players, and run the 3-4 the way its supposed to be run, Im fine with it. But if we have an 8th year of the bend over and take it 3-4..... Heads SHOULD roll. Again.

There are lots of free agents out there that can help us on defense. I would love to bring in at least 4 (2 DL, ILB and Safety). The draft can do the rest.

OH I agree. But who we bring in wont matter one bit if we go back into a bend but dont break and continue to break mode.

I agree. Hopefully we bring in Tarver and then our staff will complete. I see lots of reasonable deals with some of the these free agents. I just hope that SM can swallow his pride and admit that the defense needs as massive upgrade and it will take multiple free agent signings and multiple high draft picks to get it on track. I see considerable improvement if we address the DLine and Safety unit. Those were both awful last year.

Pretty good list, but I think 80% of them end up staying put. Its already started with the Browns resigning Collins to a pretty nice deal. And most teams are not going to let the 27 and under crowd hit FA as aside from Dallas, and the Jets, no one is really cap strung this year. So unless you are looking at some one from Dallas, NYJ the Chiefs or the Eagles, I dont see alot of guys hitting FA due to cap concerns if they are in the age range you appear to have targeted.

we will have to use the draft mostly

maybe a phil taylor can stop gap for us or an AJ francis or an mbu but you might get 1 decent defender at best

Skinsdad- We had the 28th ranked defense with the worst safety unit and DLine in the game. There will be plenty of options for upgrades due to the fact that our defense is so bad. I highly doubt we come away with 1 decent FA defender in the offseason.

If you are going to wait around for the draft mostly, the team will not improve for another 3 years. It doesn't take NFL teams 6 years to improve. We can't be in rebuilding mode for a decade.

This would be my 5;

10. Tony Jefferson S ARI 25
--Although we haven't had success with FA DBs, Jefferson has been efficient in starting and limited roles
he also comes from a 3-4 defense.

16. Brandon Williams DT BAL 28
--His stats are very impressive for a NT, I believe they rank in the top 5.

29. Ronald Leary G DAL 28
--If he's smart Ron will recognize he's the missing link to one of the next up and coming lines in the league.

36. Stephon Gilmore CB BUF 26
--I think we've expected too much from Breeland, especially with no pass rush.
Gilmore should be a huge improvement.

41. Zach Brown ILB BUF 27
--At least one of our starting ILB needs to be replaced. They have been overachievers.

We'd of better off signing Damon Harrison last year in FA. That said, At the very least we need a DT/NG and a safety or LB with leadership qualities from the above list.

If we whiff completely in FA. Or worse yet, go at it half-assed like last year. I will be quite peeved.

Like I wrote before; I don't have a problem with the Skins running a 3-4 I just haven't been thrilled by the DCs behind the curtains or the players trying to execute it.

If Washington was still running the 4-3 but had bottom dweller coordinators in charge and third string players were 2/3 of the starting group our guys D would still be dreadful.

From what I've heard what a buddy who is an avid Colts fan(as well as a fellow Redskins booster) Manusky is a lateral movement from Barry and we saw what happen when he didn't have any talent. Greg isn't the type to make chicken salad out of chicken feed so McCloughan has to invest some first round talent and cap space towards beefing the defense up. Keep in mind he's seen both Joe and Greg coaching so he has a fairly good idea what to expect from the new hire.

The sad part is, with the new DC he will just have average results with an abundance of talent. However with Gruden and Big Cuz driving the offense a mediocre one will be enough to turn The B&G into a powerhouse.

Can anyone explain why our top priority would be a NT who will play on 25-30% of the downs? Are you using this guy at DT also?

What are you going to do with this NT when it is 2nd and long (I know, a dream) and Kerrigan and Murphy are the DEs and Baker is one DT? Who is the other DT? The NT? This is a defense we have been in a lot and will most likely continue to be in under Manusky.

Lets take the D that dad posted the other day. You have Kerrigan and Murphy at ends, Baker and Mysterious person at DT. Mason and Compton in the A gaps. Cravens goes to the weak side of the offense on the line of scrimmage as a potential blitzer. Breeland, Norman and two Mysterious safety are in cover some sort of coverage?

Over and over I see are we 3-4 or 4-3? Our base is 3-4 but we are going to be in 4-3, 4-2 more often than 3-4. So why is NT a priority?

I agree we need another DT, I believe we need a much faster ILBer, I believe we can use another safety. I would take a competent NT but it would not be my first priority unless it was a guy that could play DT in the sets the D will play more often.
