He is a top pitcher and can bring a lot to the table but if you step back and look at the metrics ..it raises some questions ..
Snell will probably want ar least 120M over 4 years. Looking at his career numbers there are some red flags. His career spans 9 years. In 2017 he was stellar. 21-7 (TBR) and a CYA. In 2021 was very good. 14-9 (SD) and a CYA The other 7 years are a mystery. In 4 of those years he posted a losing record. In the other 3 seasons he was just a touch better than a 500 pitcher. Hard to say that the CYA years are a model of his ability. He has 7 years that say otherwise. If we loso out on Snell or pass ... what pitchers should we try and target

I would not pay top dollar for Snell, much due to the reasons you listed (though I place almost no value on W-L, I agree with your conclusions, nonetheless). If we can get him for a near-fair price, sure. But I would argue that we really don’t even need to bring anyone else in, even if we let him walk.

As for who to target, I would be fine with going after Soto or Alonso, but I don’t think breaking the bank for Alonso is a smart idea, and I doubt Soto will be changing teams. I wouldn’t be opposed to bringing Canha back on a 1+1 deal or something like that.

Canha is decent. I guess he would be okay to keep but he is getting up there in age for a baseball player. Not sure how much longer before he drops off the production cliff

Agree 100%. But we need someone to play 1B until Eldridge is ready, and that could be 3 or 4 years. And I don’t trust Wade to stay healthy enough to hand the keys to for such a key position like 1B.

I'd love to see us nab a RH power hitter. It should have been Soler. Whether slotting in at 1st or DH, we should have an opening. IMO it would do wonders for stabilizing the offense.

I'd like to keep Snell, but I wouldn't mortgage the future. On the off chance we make the playoffs in the next 2yrs, that would be a formidable series rotation

Well, could be worse. We could be Seattle, their team BA is .216, and they just fired their manager and hitting coach.
League wide the hitters average is lowest it’s been in many decades like .240ish. It’s not just us.

I'd still open the bank for him but dude just threw his 5th walk of one inning. That has to be close to a record...looking it up

Not exactly true ... been this way (240ish) since 2020. But was in the 260s in the early 2000s. If you look at the baseball reference site you can see the decline over the years ...

The new pitching doctrine (multiple per game, strikeouts, never face batters 3 times, etc) works (that’s why the do it and why the league is thinking about a 6 inning minimum
