Alex Smith says he sprained middle finger on his throwing hand | ProFootballTalk

Alex Smith threw for 303 yards on Sunday and led the 49ers to a franchise-record 621 offensive yards in a performance that could be described as raising a big middle finger to all those who have doubted his ability to lead a winning team.

That’s figurative, of course, and it’s a good thing because Smith actually hurt his middle finger during the 45-3 romp over the Bills. Smith had x-rays on the middle finger of his right hand after the game came to a close, something that had the potential to but a dark cloud over an otherwise wonderful day for the team.

It looks like the skies are still relatively clear. Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com reports that Smith said he suffered a sprain of the finger on his final pass of the game in the fourth quarter. There wasn’t much sign that something was wrong with Smith at the time since the wide margin on the scoreboard made it easy to think that Colin Kaepernick was just in to run out the clock.

There’s no word about the chances of Smith missing next week’s showdown with the Giants, but there doesn’t seem to be much concern about the condition of the 49ers quarterback. That’s a good thing since the rematch of last year’s NFC Championship Game has the makings of one of the best on the schedule in Week Six or any other week.

I hated that pass because he had a perfect rating at 158.3 until that throw. Oh well, I guess he's not going on Wikipedia today.

Wasn't that the pass intended for VD that sailed a bit cause Alex got SMACKED as he was releasing the ball?

Yeah, that was the pass - it might have gone for six like the last TD against the Lions. Oh well, can't be greedy; Maybe he can get a perfect game later this year.

If Smith can't go next week against NY they are in trouble. Eli's coming and they better be at their best.

The Giants will be starting a practice squad player at SS if Phillips is still out. Hello Vernon Davis.

Davis seems to be getting better and better. I've noticed he has stopped jumping every time he catches the ball.

Kaepernick is extremely innacurate as a passer. They'd have no chance against the Giants front seven with him in there at QB.

extremely is quite extreme in itself, no? We'll see, but I wouldn't go far to say as extremely inaccurate(if)....

I have noticed that too and that over the shoulder catch on 3rd down that he caught in years past he would have dropped that. Looks like the time he spent with Moss on the Juggs machine has really helped out.

I liked seeing Vernon's little hops as he caught the passes. It was little cool - similar to like how Jordan used to stick his tongue out when doing a reversed layup.

Wasn't Jordan's tongue out for 75% of the game? And it was cool till he got tackled in the air instead of staying on his feet and running away from the defender.

I think it severely affected his hands and catch concentration. I'm happy to see it gone.

I heard that Harbaugh is concerned about Smith's finger for this week. He should be. Alex Smith is the one 49er that they cannot afford to lose. Everyone else can be replaced; not Smith.

I guess they could fool us, Smith certainly is different with the media than in his first years, but knowing Harbaugh and knowing Smith, the fact that Harbaugh plays it up and Smith plays it down seems to fit with Smith's finger being fine.

Harbaugh doesn't say everything straight, so he'll make people underestimate Alex's ability due to a sprained middle finger. If they assume Smith can't make even his normal throws, we'll exploit it. If they don't buy it, no harm no foul.

Smith is generally upfront and honest for the most part, he's saying it's fine. Now, he could be saying that because he's not about to let Kaep have a full game if he can help it. Or he could say that because he wants the Giants to think it's fine to hide a real problem. But for some reason, I don't think either of those are the case completely. I think he thinks he's fine. If he plays, there's no excuse. If there were a legitimate cause to failure, as in real injury, it's his fault for playing.

Alex is playing really really good, but Nolan you can't definitively say that the offense would be crippled without Alex yet. Colin might do alright, granted the offense's plan as it currently exists would probably suffer because Colin's pre-snap read level isn't close to where Alex is... but who says they have to run Alex's offense with Kaep behind center?? Roman is a smart guy, he can adapt. That is still a possibility. How would you adapt to that? Easy, you just call one play and run with it... instead of calling matching run/pass plays and having the QB decide which one to go with. Honestly, I'd trust the other 10 guys with just one play and Kaep behind center... obviously I'm a homer, but, I think the 49ers today are the perfect situation for a young QB. Dominating O-Line, great running game, and I absolutely love what Manningham, VD, Moss, Crabtree, and Williams bring to the WR corps.

The flashes I saw from Kaep in pre-season were positive, he threw well from the pocket and was great at avoiding the rush and extending plays. Will that translate to the regular season? Who knows, but if Smith did go down... the one advantage is whoever the 49ers are playing... they only know Colin as the WildKap, not the passer.

I said a lot to try and sway you, but bottom line, I love what Alex is doing and I'm rooting for him because of all the shit that gets shoveled on him.... but, in no way will I ever say that if he was injured the season was over. That's just nuts with how great the defense is and how good the rest of the offense is. I don't know how you could possibly say he is the one 49er the team can't afford to lose.
