Enormous hire. Texas immediately a threat again. Kansas 11 straight is now in jeopardy.

I really like the hire. I think it's a great fit for him and Austin.

I personally think it was a great hire as well.

But this is the time to prove himself. Really a make or break promotion for Shaka.

I'd say give him 2-3 years to recruit the kids he wants, and they may win it

I would say typically yes..but there is this thing my kids have going when they are seniors. I think I told you.

:pound:

Not yet; during the week he was pushing Avery Johnson, former Spurs guard and Mavericks coach. Johnson put out the word that he was interested, but Texas didnt pursue it.

I dont think the team will be much of a success for at least 2 seasons

There is too much diffrence in style.
Smart needs to recruit a few of his style guys first.

Barnes built teams with the low post offense as the priority and a true NBA style frontcourt
Smart runs an agressive full court trapping and pressing style with smaller athletic wings

I am not sure Smart can suddenly make all those big guys into full court pressure guys.

Smart is already working: Has offered 2016 wingman Bruce Brown of Vermont Academy

edit: now see he's offered 6-9 Javan Montgomery-Delaurier...

I believe the move had to happen. Barnes has had plenty of time and didn't do much with it. Smart's a proven guy and I wish SU was smart enough to make a change this aggressive.

I tend to agree it will take a couple of years but this is a move in the right direction.

I'm interested to see if Smart get's some of those Texas High School kids like the Harrison twins that Barnes let get away.

Will be interesting to see where both schools are in 5 years. VCU does seem primed for continued success. 3 straight winning coaches, winnable conference, new facilities on the way, commitment to pay good money for a good coach. Texas, endless resources, good recruiting ground, but plays in a far tougher conference, with Kansas...ISU and Oklahoma on the upswing, as with WVU, and then OSU. Will be interesting to see who benefits more.
