I think we can probably come close to naming the 53, but we can play around with position battles in camp in the interim to real games.

Gay, Sensabaugh, Golson, Sutton.

2017 Offseason Questions: How Costly Will Setback Be For Senquez Golson? - Steelers Depot

The kid got his chance, but barring a major recovery can we go ahead and cross Golson off the list of 53?

MT likes his vets, but has shown (with Golden) he's willing to younger if you are not doing the job. I think Gay will probably maintain his spot into a few weeks of the season...I've seen a few posters that think Sutton is going outside...I've heard he has looked good outside, and they like his versatility...got a lot of hands on balls...if he shows well in camp, he's going to get on the field on DEF, inside or out, by money would be on inside...they seem to like his preparation skills, playbook knowledge.

Poor Golson just can't catch a break... Not sure if its poor conditioning (offseason regimen) or just plain bad luck? But we've been saying it since February... We cannot count on Golson making any sort of impact. If he does then its a bonus. So you'll have to excuse me if I'm all-too-quick to write him off and not mention him.

Sensabaugh... Outside of only 1 decent season nobody knows what to expect from this kid. He's got the experience, but IIRC he carries an injury history.

Sutton... Most of us will be watching this kid very closely in camp. I hope his injury doesn't keep him out very long because everything I've heard to date has been good. Like you said ATL, inside/outside versatile and so far has shown no rookie hiccups with the playbook. We know that Butler, Tomlin & Lake have dumbed down the secondary schemes quite a bit in an effort to get the talent on the field quicker, so that helps. But his ball skills have been on display during minicamps & OTAs, which is something this secondary sorely needs.

Gay... As much as it pains me to say it, I agree that Gay will hold down the job for a length of time. But if everything we've been hearing about the switch to more man coverage is true, then I don't think Gay will be able to keep that job for very long. From a fan standpoint we all want to see Sutton win the job but I'm thinking we better prepare ourselves for Gay to maintain that spot for longer than we want.

LOL...I might've mentioned him for the last time as well.

I actually think it might not be bad for Sutton to watch Gay a game or two, but I really believe he's going to play quite a bit this season.

Sensabaugh probably makes it now...a name I'm looking to hear about is Bryan Allen...I hope he can find a role.

Same here! My initial 53 had Brian Allen over Sensabaugh. But I haven't heard a peep on him.

@FaCe-LeE-uS...it's early, and I hope they're able to avoid the big injury, but from early indications I like what I'm hearing about the DEF...TJ looks like he's going to be playing early...which is ideal for Harrison.

The biggest question I have is how will they play 3rd down.

IMO its all about the pass rush. Having Dupree, Shazier, Heyward & Tuitt all healthy will be a huge boost in that department. Anyone else that can contribute in the pass rush department (Harrison & Watt) will be a bonus. Down the stretch last season the defense was racking up the most sacks in the league and the entire unit looked different because of it.

It begins and ends with the pass rush for this DEF, any DEF, but particularly this group.

Until, we see it we can only go by the past. Even w/o that proven dbl digit sack guy I think this DEF has more potential than LY. Collectively this might be the best front 7 since they lost to GB in the SB even with LT in MIA now...Not the best by any means, but probably the most athletic DL we've seen in the PIT 34 era. With Hargrave being able to take snaps at DE, plus Alualu, they have some legit depth.

It was evident from the coaching decisions that they were not comfortable putting the secondary under pressure. They're still not totally settled on the back end...most of us feel as if Gay will give way to somebody else before the season is out. I'm really hoping Burns and Davis take a big steps as 2nd yr players and we can start looking at the back end as playmakers instead of needing to protect them!

That said, I think Tomlin got his vet (Sens) for the slot in case Gay becomes the punching bag, but Sutton is probably going to be that guy at some point during the yr. There's no reason to coach scared this season. Gotta let Butler be aggressive like he was in '15.
