In the last several years, Why are runners sliding BY the plate and tagging it with their hand instead of sliding TO the plate with their toe?

I’ve seen about a dozen would-be runs turn into outs because of this as catchers apply tags ahead of the score.

Who is teaching this? Why isn’t it being corrected?

Because the catcher is blocking the plate? :noidea: I like the old rule if the catcher is blocking the plate then the runner needs to take him out. Just like Pete Rose use to. The base runner has just as much right to home base as the catcher.

No. The catcher isn’t blocking the plate.

I think catchers are beginning to catch on to the fact they need to play the plate like a baseman and not a catcher.
With the new rule a lot of catchers were not sure where to stand and would stand of to the side. Thus the base runner would slide as far away from the catcher as possible. It was working, but with the catchers adapting to the rule, they are learning to play home plate like a baseman and the slide off the side isn't working anymore.

First, that dunce Machado almost gets picked off at second base with two outs, then he slides BY the plate giving the catcher an extra fraction of a second to try to tag him out.
