Analysis: It’s no surprise given Jackson's big-play ability that the Redskins would average more yards per play with him in the game. Also, when the Redskins would be in some obvious run situations, they would remove Jackson because of his inconsistent blocking (a polite way to put it). So that would lower the number with him out of the game.
Yards per pass attempt
With him: 8.63.
Without: 6.70.
Analysis: You can look at this year’s number for the season (6.5) and make the obvious deduction. They are more explosive with him in the game. Jackson not only could win on deep balls, but because cornerbacks feared his speed, he often won on comebacks, too. Jackson did not need to be the crispest route-runner to create separation on intermediate plays. But this stat isn’t shocking when you look, too, at the average air yards per pass attempt with him (7.95) and without (6.54).
Play-action
With him: 12.28 yards per attempt on 88 passes.
Without: 10.50 YPA on 18 passes.
Analysis: The Redskins like to run deep play-action with two-man routes on first downs; it’s a lot more dangerous with Jackson in the game. As long as they’re committed to the run, it can remain a dangerous weapon upon his return.
Passer rating
With him: 93.1.
Without: 75.4.
Analysis: Well, it’s natural that your most dangerous receiver would help a quarterback’s passer rating. For what it’s worth, Kirk Cousinsposted a 100.7 rating when throwing to Jackson last season (17-for-34, 447 yards, three touchdowns, two interceptions). My guess is that Cousins’ success on throws 20 or more yards downfield will improve with Jackson in the lineup. It needs to improve.
Yards per carry
With him: 4.73.
Without: 3.24.
Analysis: In theory, the Redskins should face fewer eight-man fronts with Jackson in the game, which should create better blocking opportunities -- and therefore more lanes. I’m surprised by the big discrepancy but, again, in short-yardage run situations Jackson won’t be in the game, so that skews the number at least a little bit. But it’s still a revealing stat and one you can credit to his presence.
Interesting. Hope the D sticks with a focus on execution and putting the D in a position to do what it was built for rather than cute tricks myself. This is not a team you want to be cute with.
If you do your job with tackling, gaps and execution, no one can complain. Sometimes the better team wins, but do your best to beat the guy in front of you.
