Pence has been rather vocal about wanting to get a multi-year deal done with the Giants. He has made very visible displays of pleasure each time he wasn't traded this season (a huge scream in the clubhouse on 7/31 and the little jig with Panda the other day when he was pulled back from the waiver-wire). However, he has said that the Giants have not made any attempts to begin the negotiation process with him.

I understand that the Giants do not want to deal with these things in-season. It can become a distraction, and talking to player A while not talking to player B can send unintended messages. I get it.

But this season is lost. Pence SHOULD be a priority target this off-season. Why NOT lock him in now before he gets competitive offers from other teams?

Wanting to stay someplace can be real draw for certain players, but once they start to see the number of zeros getting thrown their way, their attachment to a zip code will naturally diminish.

This makes a lot of sense, and Sabean and co aren't stupid, so the answer can only be something like:

a) The brass have made it clear to Pence and his agent that they are working on something

or

b) They believe it's very important to stick with the no-talks-during-the-season strategy, so as not to set a precedent. Not every season will be 'lost', so in the future the next guy will demand talks like Pence got

Might even be a little of both

I heard Evans say a couple weeks ago that they have an organizational rule not to talk contract in-season. Like I said, I get it.

But of the two BIG FAs, Pence, I feel, is clearly the more important of the two. Signing him up, I guess, they feel will tell Timmeh that he is a low priority, which he is.

I guess they want the market to play out a bit with Timmeh, though, and don't want the public slap to his face. They dont want another Weezy.

I also agree that we should go after Pence before the season ends. At least put an offer to the table. If Pence declines and wants to test the market ... then so be it. I just don't want to be in the position that we lose him because he never felt 'wanted' or something along those lines. I tend to think it may have alot to do with what MSG stated within this thread. Could very well be a big organizational standard and they have no intentions of budging on it.

Obviously they want Pence back, but they are not going to break the bank for him, which is smart. They'll qualify him in the offseason, which should deter some teams as we saw how Bourn, Lohse and Soriano all were greatly effected by being qualified. Maybe they'll let Pence explore the market and then come back to the giants for a shot to come close to what is being offered to him. FA classes are getting weaker and weaker, so the loss of a pick for some teams may not deter them from making a big offer. It could be risky to let him hit the open market, but would anyone feel good about a 5/75? I think 3/45 or 4 years with the 4th either being a club or vesting option would be fair. Pence will be 31 in April and is a fringe all star IMO, but hope to see him in a Giants uniform next season.

I wouldn't be surprised if they extend him before the QO is due. Remember, the Giants will have a month to sign him after the season before he hits FA. One of the few silver linings of not making the playoffs.

All out ...all the time. Iron man.

Never would sit out any games even when he was tired and dropped like 30 points of his average. He does everything he can do for the team.

Sign him for sure.

$15M/yr for 15-20 HRs a year? That's steep. But the FA class is thin. Whoever signs him will overpay.
