I know there is a lot of rumor and speculation about his status. Is there any word on what it really is?

I have heard so much that i'm not sure what to think anymore. What's the latest on him?

I really hope this may not be a career altering situation he is the most dynamic player in the game and that would really suck.

I'd be flabbergasted if this one big one put him out for a career, but then again, I'd be supremely naive if I actually believed this was the first concussion(s) he's had. I hope this specialist thing is merely a last step before he gets intense for some offseason training. I know he's gonna take every precaution necessary that he's ready, especcccially because it's the offseason. That's why I'm not really reading into this too much.

Yeah, not to sound ridiculous or shallow, or focused on a player and not the team, but if by some horrifying cause he can't return to the game...man, I'd just be crushed. It'd be hard to watch for a while, knowing he wouldn't return. I love sport and my team above a player, but that would really test me.

Was listening to Mark Madden the other day...he was saying that Sid is such a fitness fanatic, great work ethic, first guy on the ice and last one off the ice...Double M says he just always assumed that Sid would play, and be a force in the NHL, into his 40's....now he's just hoping that Sid can make it until he's 30....can't say I disagree with the thinking...

It's really scary. I basically hate talking about it, but with you guys I don't mind. Shit is getting serious. What makes me optimistic is that he was very confident he would be fine by September. He's just not the type of guy to say that shit if he didn't actually believe it (he would say nothing or that's he unsure about everything).

My sister has a concussion and is going to the same specialist as him...she's had somewhat of a similar situation in that her symptoms went away for awhile and then came back. He said that was a good sign (obviously that they went away for awhile beforehand).

I am really scared. Like Pix, I don't like to set my sights on one player, but he is the identity of the Pens and there is so much he can accomplish. Pittsburgh has been blessed with star players, but I really hope this doesn't turn into another "What If?" scenario as with Mario. Yeah, he had an awesome career, but I will kind of always wonder what would have happened if he had been even 50% more healthy.

ewwwwwwwwwwww.. mark madden is the worst!

but that is a decent comment i s'pose

i think management/coaching staff made this seem worse than it is.. there have been quite a few times in the past decade or so where a concussion has knocked someone out for 4-6 months.. management made it worse by saying almost every other week that he was close to a return, getting the fans hopes up.. then when he didn't come back they'd say he had a setback, causing more concerns.. IMO if they had just come out and said he was out indefinitely, and just left it at that.. the career ending concerns would not be there

It's Sidney Crosby, the career ending rumors are there when he has a hangnail. You're right though, it's not atypical for guys to be out 6 months with a concussion, and fans just need to be patient. If he has to wait a little into the season, than fine, do what needs to be done. I just really don't want to see a career tainted because of this. The way he was playing this season was insane, and it would kill me to see a shadow of that player.

I thought the Pens' management said there is no timetable and that the doctors and stages of recovery would determine when he'd come back. Wasn't it more media speculation that was setting dates and stages in the playoffs? Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what I remember.

The only timetable there ever was was in the very beginning when they said a week. *sigh* If only.

Thanks to all for the feedback. I always get concerned when the term "he had a setback" is used. I'm not doctor but a "setback" IMO when recovering from a concussion is not a true statement. If it's another type of injury like a ACL or groin pull you can have a set back by working out and over doing it.

With a concussion a "setback" = He is not progressing as well as we had thought he would have by now. This is JMO. You can't rehab a concussion the best you can do is rest and hope for the best.

Again thanks for the feedback and this got me to thinking about this site and the good posters we have here. At the "other" place this topic would have gone to hell in a hand basket by now. Loki, I assume this is what you were referring to when you said you don't mind talking about it with us guy's.

Anyway, Good luck to Crosby and I hope he gets well soon. He is fun to watch and as a hockey fan enjoy watching him.

maybe you're right, the management did cover it well.. but the media took every step forward as a sign that he was close to returning.. he would hit the gym and the media would take that as "oh he could be back as soon as next week".. he'd hit the ice and the media would say "crosby to return this weekend?"..

apologies to the management, perhaps it was the media that deserved the tongue lashing

I think he will be okay, or at least I certainly hope so. Despite some criticism he gets from people of lower IQs (on a board that shall remain nameless, among other places) I'm glad they didn't rush him back this season. Maybe in the long-run its a good thing that Malkin was out for the year too, otherwise there might have been a temptation to rush Sid back to take a run at the Cup.

Excellent post and great observation julian. They may have been tempted to bring him back too soon had Malkin been in the line up.

Concussions are not only serious for obvious reasons but in so many cases have an adverse effect on the players psychologically {sp?}. Tim Connolly has not been even close to the player he can be since suffering a serious one a couple of years ago.

I'm sure we could all name a few players that were never the same after having one.

Good post.

Crosby was at the Cannes Film festival, so according to Dr. Mark Recchi he is completely fine.

Hindsight is 20/20, but I don't think he should have been back in the lineup as soon as he was after taking that hit from Steckl at the Winter Classic. Bottom line is that he needs to get healthy and I for one hope he's fully healed and ready to go at Pens training camp.
