Belichick has coached longer and won more championships than Lombardi.

People forget he won a couple of rings as a DC with Parcells. I believe he has 8 Championship Rings.

People hate the Patriots so much that changing the name would probably create an uncontrollable rise in suicide and mass killings.

Once he retires, I’d be ok with naming it the Lombardi-Belichick Trophy.

Absolutely not. And I love Belichick.

The Lombardi Trophy and others like it transcend the individual accomplishment of who the award is named after.
The award becomes synonyms with greatness.

The idea is not to supplant the legacy of the old time greats but to honor them.

Getting the Lombardi trophy is the ultimate honor and you perverse the past at the same time.

Fuck Lombardi. It should be the Halas Trophy.

Nah. The history is good the way it is. Belichick being the hardcore football historian is I imagine would agree.

The trophy could have been named for others to but probably went with Lombardi since his accomplishments were recent to that point in time and he had recently died of cancer. I agree Halas was more than worthy... And I agree about keeping it as is and maybe renaming the hall of fame or giving a big chunk in his honor.

It should be named the Tim Donaghy trophy.

If BB had coached during that time frame, it would be the Belichick trophy already.

....and how well would Lombardi have dealt with today's rules, restrictions, prima donna attitudes and race relations?

and salary cap? When Lombardi coached, players were making about $5000-$7000 a year. Of course, my father was making $.90 an hour driving a truck. I can remember when he worked a Union restricted 60 hour week and made the incredible gross check of $63.00 with an immense take home of $50. People were averaging a Gross salary of between $1500-$3000 a year in Lombardi's era.
