Something new for Shark prospects: rookie tournament in B.C. starting Sept. 12 | Working the Corners

Still not working, still finding off-season news in the inbox.

No, nothing as critical as who’s staying, who’s leaving or who’s the next captain. Sorry. But the Sharks did announce today that they’ll be participating in a more complex rookie tournament than years past, when the competition was limited to Pacific Division foes.

This year, prospects with the Sharks and Ducks will compete against their counterparts on the three Western Canada teams in a round-robin tournament starting Sept. 12 in Penticton, British Columbia.

The games will be played at the South Okanagan Events Centre at the southern end of Okanagan Lake, a popular resort area south of Kelowna where more than a few NHL players — including Dany Heatley and Scott Hannan — reside in the off-season.

The Sharks are scheduled to face Anaheim on Sept. 12, Vancouver on Sept. 13 and Edmonton on Sept. 15.

Personal aside: I haven’t been to Penticton, but I did spend a couple days in Kelowna during the 2004-05 lockout, working on stories for both the travel and sports sections. The Okanagan region has a Tahoe-like feel to it with a year-round climate mild enough for vineyards and fruit trees. Not a bad place to kick back for a few days.

Ticket information available on the Sharks web site, by the way.

Looks like the Sharks rooks will face off against the Western Canadian rooks ;-)~

Canucks Flames and Oilers had a mini tourney like this last year (or was it 2008? both??)
They are fun to watch, and a good way to guage the man-among-boys factor.
Last time it was Mason Raymond who stood out for me as not quite belonging in a prospects game.

Id like to go watch this year seeing as Hall/Seguin might be there

I was reading on a kelowna website that they are in a tizzy that Penticton got this training camp and Kamloops got the BC Lions camp and they got nothing ... the South okanagan rivalry lives!!!

They should fix that mess known as Highway 97 that goes through Kelowna, that's a disaster during tourist season.

u talkin about the stretch of 97 over the bridge that mysteriously becomes Harvey and runs through kelowna? lol true ... cant exactly call it a highway when there are signal controlled intersections, can you?

kelowna cant really complain ... the same time the nhl training camps start, the whl rockets are just starting up so who is gonna play where ... Prospera is taken

That's the stretch...Don't get me wrong, Kelowna is beautiful, but I try to avoid that stretch of road at all costs.
