On the radio I heard that Shams is 'reporting' the NBA asked the players to take a 50% pay cut starting in April and the players association countered with 25% starting in May.

I support the players here.

The term 'paycut' is never a good thing no matter who it applies to.

Difference is, these players are still getting paid millions even if they do take 50%

Many of which are currently self isolating and playing video games.

The NBA teams aren't making any revenue.

They got their TV money banked already. The owners have even more than the players. 25% seems fair.

Chris Silva of the Heat is scheduled to make under 500,000 this year. A 50% pay cut is huge for him.

The guys who get the decent to great contracts will be fine with a 50% pay cut. It is the end of bench, the undrafted rookies, and the 2 way players who will suffer from this

Maybe they can negotiate a tiered percentage based on what a guy makes?

Lebron, AD, Giannis...they can all take a 50% paycut...especially since they are still getting their endorsement money.

But some 2 way guy, or a guy on a rookie deal, that's gonna be a lot tougher for them to take.

We're talking about a 50% paycut for the month of April, not the season. Do they even get paid in May?

What the league should do is ask those players to donate those funds to help their local communities.

Yeah, poor guys getting paid a mere $250k a year for sitting at home.

I hope they’ll be able to pay their bills this month...

Yep. Things are more expensive when you're making that money. Your salary dictates your cost of living. Not going to live in a studio apartment when making that so that makes a huge difference

Yeah, the vast majority of people live right at the edge of what they can afford. A 50% pay cut for most people would be very difficult to deal with, for even a short time.

So, for NBA players, guys like Lebron, etc. who have money that will last their family for generations, don't have to worry about it. Guys like that make more off of endorsements and other businesses than they do on their NBA contracts.

But the guy on the end of the bench who's just trying to stay in the league, is likely going to struggle.

I will say though, that one advantage they have is that they may very well be able to turn to the league, their team and/or teammates for help.
