I know in Canada they have the battle of Alberta and the Battle of Ontario but here is when I get confused.

HNIC is always promoting the number of Canadian teams still involved in the playoffs.

If Ottawa or Toronto or Edmonton and Calgary are still in the playoffs do Canadian fans cheer for them because they are Canadian cities?

I don't seem to understand where there is so much "hate" between the cities but when playoff time comes they seem to back the "bad guys". Is this a media thing or do fans really do this.

Being an NFL fan and hating the Dolphins I do not want them to win anything because of the rivalry.

This has always baffled me and I'm hoping to get some feed back here. Is it a national pride issue or like I said a media (CBC) issue?

I will never ever cheer for the Oilers, the battle of Alberta runs deep. Same pretty much goes for the Habs and Leafs. I don't mind the Sens though and Vancouver is a special case for me due to watching a Canucks mini-training camp when I was about 10 or 11 years old in my hometown and one of my favourite players being Trevor Linden who grew up in my hometown.

That's just me though.

boss ... id say the majority of canadian fans in one city WOULD NOT cheer for their rival canadian team if that rival team were still alive

But because its been so long since a canadian team won a cup, a growing segment would want a canadian team to go far regardless of where they are. Because when it comes down to it, I have more in common with someone in Calgary (ie more than just my passport) than someone in Carolina and Id appreciate that joe average fan in calgary celebrating a cup win since personally I think they have the same level of passion for the game communally speaking as we in vancouver do. Personally, I wouldnt outwardly wave the flag for a canadian rival but if they were to win, Id tip my hat to them.

the whole cbc thing of HNIC wanting any canadian team go for a cup run is strictly about the money. Afterall they are canadian taxpayer funded. Im reading on the other board that some wings and hawks troll douchebags are saying the NHL ratings would be sky high for a western conference final series matchup of wings hawks.

Of course, to them tv ratings actually only mean US tv ratings. The cbc got 3 million viewers for kings canucks game 6 and Versus is happily averaging 600,000 viewers for first round games

I would not root for another western Canadian team. I did not cheer for the Flames in their run, though I appreciated the contribution of the Red Mile to Canadian Culture. I did not cheer for Edmonton on their run, and even their Whyte Avenue celebrations were a bit embarrassing in comparison.

I have never, nor will ever cheer for the Leafs. As such, an enemy of my enemy is my friend, so I don't mind cheering for Ottawa and Montreal.

so guys ... have you boarded the Habs train? lol

Ill jump on and cheer for them ... I have friends and family in Montreal and I like Halak, Subban and my kosher paisano Mike Cammalleri. what clinched it for me was Rick Moffats call at the end of the game ... "TEAR DOWN THE IGLOO, SIDNEY HAS LEFT THE BUILDING

go habs go

yes, I have. this is just a special run. reminds me a bit of the 10 overtime win playoffs.
it's kind of strange though, as the three remaining teams are the ones I like the most in the east.
honestly going into game 7 on friday, I don't know who I would root for.

in the west its easy. I like the Sharks (in spite of them beating my team far too often), and really really hate the Hawks.

I think most of the fans who cheer for the Canadian teams simply because they are Canadian are the more casual hockey fans. I'm Canadian and my favorite team is the Sharks so obviously it doesn't matter too much to me. If I actually lived in or near a Canadian city with an NHL team I'm sure I would cheer for them but wouldn't care too much about the rest.

This link from TSN might interest you Boss:

Hodgemail: If you weren't a Habs fan before, are you now?

Some of the responses are kind of interesting.

I think that it upsets some fans in the Great White North that the last time a Canadian (also Canadien) was against the Kings in 93. A team from Canada has won one cup in the last 20 years. Compare that to the previous 20 years and a Canadian team won 12 of the cup titles or the 50s/60s when 15 time a Canadian team won. Who cares if ice hockey was invented by British soldiers? Canadians wrote the first rule book. They feel that the cup belongs in Canada and if some one in Ottawa has to cheer on the Habs then that is the cost of getting the Cup home.

I can't foresee too many outside cook-outs at these camps.
