Last week a guy I work with and I had a long debate about the goaltending situation in the East. This morning I had my weekly call with him and a new topic came up. Last weeks thread seemed to go well so I thought I'd post the one for today.

This one got me fired up. He made a prediction for the Winnipeg Jets - playoffs for 2 of the next for years. "Fuck that and fuck them, I say!" (I live in Atlanta and it sucked losing my second favorite team) So I'm arguing the under on this as I'd be shocked to see them in the playoffs twice (even once) in that span, no matter what division they play in (see Jets/Central thread). They can't attract the talent to make enough progression and they just downgraded their coach. Anyway, does anyone else have any feelings on the over/under for the Thra-shit... Jets making the playoffs twice in the next 4 years?

I think the Jets will make the playoffs in two of the next four years as I see them as a team on the rise. I don't want to start a Eastern Conference vs. Western Conference debate (as these things usually go in cycles), but I see the East getting stronger and the West getting a little weaker. The move to the Western Conference for the 2012-2013 season should benefit the Jets.

it's a hell of a long ways from an 80 point team to a playoff team no matter which conference.
Dallas (Fuck them) missed with 95 last year.

maybe they get in once in the next 4.
either next year (sheer emotion of the new Jets team), or at the end of the cycle when they've had time to improve.

I don't think they will have a tough time attracting decent free agents because of where they are, but i also don't particularly like the way they've put together the management team. They've let some good hockey people go (Dudley primarily), for lateral-at-best moves.

Interesting proposition....

If you look at the next 4 years, I'd lock Washington, Boston, and Pittsburgh into playoff spots. Tampa is also really good but key players are aging, and Buffalo and New York are strong as well. Philly is a wild card. Montreal seems on a downslope. But New Jersey should get better.

If Vegas had an over/under on this, it would be 1.5, and I'd take the under. I bet they make it once in the next four.

LOL! Ooops, I totally forgot about that. Understandable since I was in a 4-page thread about east/west movement yesterday. :L

I think they have a good chance. The have people other than Waddell in charge so that by itself helps. I am not sold on Pavelec as a legit number one but think the team in front of him now may be the best its ever been for that franchise.

I think they do make it twice. I've said before that I think they are an all-star away from being a very good team. Maybe not a legit contender but very good. They have plenty of young talent and a group of just the right type of role players. If the goaltending holds up I think they can be a very competitive team.

Here's my biggest thing, they seem to be building too much of the team based on where the players are from, rather then what they do. They seem to do a good job of getting players with intangibles, but what exactly is their core? Kane, Ladd, Byfuglien, Pavelec? I'm sorry, but I think they're still a few major pieces away from being a perennial contender. Let's be honest, at the end of the day this will be a cap floor team.

Good point the previous Jets were always a low salary team correct?

Also it's not like they can't get better or make the playoffs several times over the next decade. The question is specifically how many times over the next four years will they make it. I don't see them being good enough to do it twice.

The travel is going to wear on them this year (and I don't think that they are good enough to make the PO yet) I think their opportunity will come once they are moved West. So the question really becomes can they make the playoffs two out of three years after next season?

I would throw Enstrom and Bogosian in there as well.

Sure, but Toby and Buff are only effective together. If they're split up, as we saw in the second half of last year, neither is individually strong. Bogo is definitely growing into a solid two-way guy, so it'll be interesting how dedicated he is after his first decent payout this year.

I just think we can make the same argument for a lot other lower-tier clubs, but we all still admit that there are at least 5-6 teams that they won't overtake in the next couple of years in each conference. In my opinion, their best shot is getting into the Central with Detroit leaving for the East.

It will definitely be interesting, that's for sure - I think they're in tough this first season with Washington and Tampa Bay likely finishing 1-2 in the division. Can they nab 3rd and get a playoff spot?!?

/Maybe the Jets should submit an offer sheet for Stamkos?

starting with that, i definitely think they could get 3rd in that division this year.. i think florida will improve a little bit, but they still wont compete.. carolina is deteriorating IMO.. they have staal, skinner, and ward, after that they are pretty weak

i think they have a very solid group of d-men with bogo, enstrom, and buff.. and playing in front of pav i think they'll shut down a lot of teams offensively..

scoring goals is gunna be a problem though i think.. kane is a legit top 6 guy assuming he continues to improve, but after that? little, laad, antropov, and wheeler have had stretches where they looked legit, and stretches where they looked mediocre at best.. burmistrov is supposed to be a quality prospect, but in the next couple years? your d-men can only do so much on offense

elo brought up a good point.. i think we could probably put a lock for the bolts, caps, bruins, sabres, and pens for the playoffs.. can the jets steal one of the 3 remaining from the flyers/rags/devils/canes/habs? i see them being 5th in that pecking order, so this year is out

i do think they could make the playoffs 2 of the next 3 years after though.. i think if they add a couple pieces on offense they could easily be a playoff contender

This is when they'll have the most free agency attraction. They're new, exciting and have a strong fan base. What happens after a losing year? The fans will mostly still be there, but they'll still be viewed as a rebuilding team. What if they have to make a coaching change? Pickings are slim as it is. Will they spend the money to compete? They have to sell out almost every single game to break even!

I think they'll make the playoffs in 1 of the next 4 years. They really need a sniper & a top 4 defenseman. They solve those two issues & they could make some noise.

That's about what I expect. As mentioned earlier, scoring goals is an immediate concern. Ladd almost did it all by himself last year. They wouldn't just need another top-6 sniper type, they need a 35+ goal scorer.

On the defensive end, I think a good shutdown pair is an immediate concern. Big Buff is a great player, but he makes as many mistakes when in his own end then anyone. It really frustrated me last year.

Does anyone know what forecheck scheme they're expected to implement?
