BIG10 Sued the NCAA and won in Federal Court regarding the NCAA's inability to enforce anti-gambling by college athletes.

ACC, BIG10, SEC are now ready to drop out of the NCAA and establish rules of their own and start their own system and league. Several member of Congress have threatened to take away their Anti-Trust exemption if they do leave. Legal Beagles within the three leagues have said that they will file their leagues legally in foreign country. Other smaller leagues may follow.

So what happens if these leagues do drop away and are no longer part of the NCAA? Will the NCAA collapse? Is there actually a need for a dollar consuming beast like the NCAA that really doesn't have anything to do with higher education and gets a piece of every athletic sport ticket.

There has been a lot of talk about this and the SEC/B1G making a joint raid on the ACC on their way out the door. Obviously Notre Dame, UNC, UVA, Va Tech, NC State, fsu and miami would be the top candidates. How many each league would take and who would go where are open questions. I would imagine the SEC/B1G would only do this in alliance with each other. That way they could agree to common rules and a playoff between themselves for all sports.

The Protection of College Sports Act pushed by Senators Cruz and Cantwell appears to be stalled in the Senate after considerable pushback by the SEC and B1G.

As it is the NCAA would not collapse but the secession of the 2 superconferences would be a massive blow. Right now it seems to be a struggle between the small frye and those 2 leagues with the small frye trying to get Congress to limit their expansion and shake them down for cash. (ie "revenue sharing" for TV contracts despite the fact that the schools in those 2 leagues have almost all the fans and thus generate the revenue)

With the SEC/B1G being 20-24 schools each, there would be plenty of teams for competitive playoffs if they did secede. The schools still in the NCAA that would be hurt especially would be the likes of Wake Forest, Duke, Syracuse, Boston College, etc. Their revenues would be slashed a la Oregon State and Washington State.

If they are not part of the NCAA and not governed by the NCAA then it ceases being college football.. and becomes a pro team of a university.

I’d take it

I would be happy winning the actual ncaa title rather than the current money laundering bs we have

Maybe they’d stop attacking hurley personally as well

Why would anyone believe federal law(s) governing college athletics would not apply to any league just because it leaves the NCAA? Still college sports, new legislation would appear quickly, if needed, to reign in a rebel conference. And if all FBS secedes from the NCAA, then the standing federal law would be amended/rewrittwn to cover any new college sports organization(s).

Funniest bit is the deal about "filing" the new league(s) in foreign countries. Insane......now your new league/association is a foreign entity subject to the geopolitical whims/international business laws of multiple countries. Would be funny to see the Saudi Aramco SEC, however. I can see trainers handing out halftime dates instead of oranges.

They're OK with that as long as they make more money. We're the only ones who care about the sanctity of college football.

The sanctity of college football went away with unlimited free agency and NIL being more than a player sell autographs and stars can sign their own endorsement deals and rosters being made up of a bunch of dudes in their mid 20’s.

It’s a professional league already

Which is why let the b10 and sec break away

I’m happy to win a real ncaa title

They can go be a minor league

The NCAA is holding on to an outdated business plan. They aren’t sustainable.

Congress can fix that

Especially when suing the ncaa is just an end around and stealing money from tax payer funded institutions

Its a business. It'd be much harder to place regulations on it that essentially require 2 conferences to serve as cash cows for others. The SEC/B1G have been able to stall if not completely stop the Protection of College Sports Act (which is really just a shakedown).

A foreign registered/sponsored business devoid of any anti-trust protection? What could go wrong?

Yeah, if you look through the Cruz/Cantwell thread that’s here, it is how a lot of the stuff I posted read. Cody Campbell from TTU really wants to be involved in the next age of CFB and helped them with a lot, and that’s pretty clear to me that there is influence shaking down the competition, so to speak.

We’ve already seen in MLB that revenue sharing doesnt work. I have no problem with the SEC and B1G stonewalling this. They have the overwhelming views and money coming in. It is a very large sport that does not necessarily compare apples to apples with other pro sports even if you wanted a revenue sharing model.

Do we need to fix some things? Yes, but revenue sharing isn’t part of it.

Why would they need anti trust protection? There would still be the NCAA. Most businesses do not have anti trust protection.

For the same reasons the NCAA is seeking it through legislation like the SCORE and PCS Acts. As The Q pointed out earlier, "....suing the ncaa is just an end around and stealing money from tax payer funded institutions." If the NCAA had had a statutory anti-trust exemption (as in granted by Congress with the weight of law), these whack-a-mole law suits would have never occurred.

You saw what happened when Team Sorsby realized they were looking at going to federal court suing a professional sports league with anti-trust protection and a CBA. Despite the bravado and fist waving, they weakly exited stage left, whimpering as they went.

the fact that they don't get protected by working for the schools is silly for me. It's essentially a psuedo govt entity since it's funded by taxpayer intuitions and works for them.
