While I suspect many Bills fans will celebrate this move, I'm not sure it was a good one for Buffalo. McDermott has the 2nd best winning record behind Marv Levy. This is a move that had to happen, and I commend the Pegulas for having the cojones to do it. McDermott is fine, a good coach in many respects, but after so many attempts to get over the hump and never getting there, I think ownership realized that they needed a different mindset/set of eyes at the HC position to re-energize the team, and refocus how to get Allen and the team to navigate the AFC to have a chance to make it to the big game, especially given the fact that Josh Allen's prime isn't going to last forever.

As for McDermott. It was the right move, IMO.

Bills are really at a stand still with the team. They had to change something. They need to tweak the rosters obviously but while Allen has many years left I think you have to make this move now and build chemistry with another coach who perhaps can get them over the mountain. They really should have been in the Super Bowl at this point. So many chances with a solid roster.

I get it. I understand. But I don't think McDermott was the problem. I see two problems:
1. No elite receivers. They have several good receivers, but not that go-to guy when you absolutely have to have yardage for a first down or TD. I blame this on the OC/GM/ownership group for not doing a better job of distributing payroll.
2. Josh Allen. He's one of my favorite non-Seahawk players in the NFL and he is a great regular-season QB. But he makes poor decisions in the playoffs, and at his age, he's probably not going to change.

There are firings because the team goes 4-13 every season (CLE, NYG, etc.) and these types of firings. Playoffs yes, but no Super Bowls.

Poor officiating is what contributed to the Nix injury. They call the hold while Allen is in the end zone, a very obvious hold, and the game is over on the resulting safety.

They underperform every season.

My only thing here is that I think people underestimate how hard it is to keep a competitive roster going for a long period of time. When Peyton left the Colts the Colts roster was embarassing. When Brady left the Patriots, the Patriots bottomed out in a couple of years. A great QB is a blessing but the GM has to play 4D chess while guys like the Bears GM that bottoms out without a QB gets to play checkers.

Bills are kinda stuck right now. Maybe the Chiefs, too.

Wouldn't it be incredible if we lose VJ and then replace him with McDermott? I think he would be great here in Denver. Those Carolina defenses were cooking with him at the helm. Had top-10 units for 4 straight seasons.

That would be pretty wild. Once McDermott joined the Broncos coaching staff, Sean Payton could sit him down and explain why it wasn't a catch and the right call was made.

Manning and Brady made their own elite receivers many years.
