Sarcastic F-wad
I went to a Bananas game tonight and had an absolute blast. It is what the Globetrotters were 40 years ago. Petco Park was PACKED, and there were shit-tons of kids everywhere.
This is SO GOOD for the game! It isn’t really baseball, but for what it is, it is perfect! The music is playing the entire time, they have cheerleaders on the field the entire time (a bunch of fat dudes who were actually really funny!) and the players will break into little skits at all times.
Some of the changes to the game are actually kinda interesting (not for REAL baseball, but as a change to the game, just for fun)…
1) 2 hour time limit. When the 2-hour limit is reached, the current inning finishes, and the game is over.
2) “Win the inning”. “Runs” don’t count. They keep score by counting the number of innings each team won. This clearly wouldn’t work in a real competitive environment, but it was a fun change to how the game is “normally” played. In the final inning, runs count, though.
3) If a player is “walked”, it is called a “sprint” instead. All 9 defenders must touch the ball before the ball is in play. The batter (and anyone on base) can advance as far as they can/want in that timeframe. Typically, anyone on base advances 2 bags. This is a seriously interesting idea, and I may be willing to be convinced this could be a good change to the real game.
4) Any foul ball caught on the fly by a fan is an out. Stupid idea if the game were competitive, but in a joke/“friendly”, it is fun as it really draws the entire park’s attention to every foul ball.
As I said, for what it is (the intellectual off spring of the Globetrotters), I absolutely LOVED it. If you have a chance to catch a game, I strongly recommend it. Just go in understanding that the target demographic is 10 year old kids, and that what you are watching is NOT baseball. It is “Bananaball”. And apparently, while the Bananas are the highest profile team, there are actually 6 teams total, and they all travel the nation playing each other. Not EXACTLY a Washington Generals situation here. The other team had quite a lot of focus on them as well (Loco Beach Coconuts). Apparently, one of the teams (Indianapolis Clowns) is actually an homage to an old ***** Barnstorming clown team from the ‘20s and ‘30s, and whomever owns the IP for them was REALLY excited about bringing the IP back and having a remnant of the old N-Leagues in the “Banana League”. Cool story, actually.
