Very hot, humid...mid afternoon..and more than likely some rain.

And did you happen to glance at that "statement" on the sign just below the .50¢ admission, in post 3?

Players in that era definitely had a tough time. The pay, though better than they could get in most jobs, was not great. The travel was terrible. The uniforms and equipment was very poor, compared to today's.
They played because they loved the game.
