According to information provided by the Red Sox, Sale broke Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez's mark by getting to 2,000 strikeouts in 1,626 innings. Martinez did it in 1,711⅓ innings, Randy Johnson in 1,733⅓ and Max Scherzer in 1,784.

sale has that at least, right?

Meh.

Even though we're only talking about 20 years, it's really different eras. Batters K'ed something like 12% of the time in Pedro's heyday. These days it's approaching 25%.

k''s used to be a shameful thing. i remember guys sitting out the final few days to avoid 100 k's.

Still a great feat but seems like with HR's going up, K's are too. With most hitters it's all or nothing. I do think pitchers in general have nastier stuff in these times though...and they throw harder. I swear almost every BP guy throws 95+ lol

Unless you were Rob Deer or Pete Incaviglia! :)

All I know is the most dominating starting pitcher I've ever seen was Pedro Martinez circa 1999 and 2000

Ks aren't what they used to be. Bobby Bonds held the season record for 34 years with 189 in 1970. He's now tied for 31st place. It's still a nice feather in his cap.

that's because they are. I don't think it's just hitters being indifferent to K's either, I think a lot of that has to do with reliever (over)usage. There's more flamethrowing relievers than ever before and relievers are accounting for more innings than ever before.

this year is going to shatter the home run record of 2017.

That's crazy because I don't think his son ever struck out half that much in a season. Maybe once or twice as a younger player.

102 in 1986 (in 113 games). He cut down on his K% from 21.1% to 14.4% in 1987.
