It's a good idea to surround an inexperienced head coach with 2 experienced coordinators. I'd be fine with any of the hires listed.

Either Fox or Del Rio would be perfect if the coach is Taylor. I agree that experience is important given the inexperience of Taylor. I also think both guys would get a lot out of the talent on the D.

Two more weeks until we have a coaching staff.... I was hoping for the Saints to win just so we could get started.

A solid list for DC. I'd like to see JDR here, personally, but an experienced coordinator is a must one way or another.

Brian Callahan is the offensive coordinator. It was confirmed by Jon Gruden as he was speaking to the press. I'm interested to see if his dad will be joining as the OL coach. A coaching staff with Bill Calahan as OL coach, JDR as DC, and the two young offensive minds (Calahan and Taylor) is probably about the best I think any of our fans could hope for. It's a good mix of coaching talent. If Tobin is half as good as our fans like to think he is, this team should have a fighting chance.

Both the Bengals and the Reds are trying again at the same time. Okay folks.

Why can't we just hire the coordinators now if that is what is being requested by Taylor? Get the coordinators out of the way so no one else nabs them? Just because we can't announce Taylor doesn't mean we can't bring in his assistants if they are available.

I’d be very happy with that staff if it comes to fruition. The biggest addition to me would be Bill Calahan as the OL coach. That guy is arguably the best in the business. The true architect of that badass Cowboys OL before Frank Pollack took it over.

Nice that the reds are trying again.

as for the Bengals, switching scapegoats out... er I mean coaches out, might be an improvement, but they can't block, tackle, carry, catch, or throw, so that remains to be seen.

That is unfortunate. However, it sounds like Del Rio didn't match up with what Zac Taylor wanted the direction of his defense to go.

A couple of available names with experience: John Fox, Mike Nolan, John Pagano.

How about an outside the box hire like: DC Brent Venebles from Clemson? He is considered to be the very best DC in the country in NCAA football. He is making I think around $2 million a year though, so you better be whipping out the check book if you plan on stealing him from Clemson.

I’m sorry, this has the Brown family stink on it. Del Rio, being a former HC, probably didn’t want to work for free.

OMG.... I'm now reading that we're going to give the job to Dom Capers. Good to know we're getting back to business as usual.

Based off the candidates, Dom Capers and Dennis Allen, it would appear that Allen has the scheme that 1) best fits our personnel currently, 2) is the same the Rams used while Taylor was there.

A noteworthy aspect of the report: Allen and Capers run fairly different schemes.

Although both play a high-pressure style, Allen runs a 4-3 defense that relies on man coverage while Capers’ scheme is similar to the 3-4 zone-blitz defense Dick LeBeau developed in Cincinnati and perfected in Pittsburgh (where the two worked together).

The Bengals have been a 4-3 team for years and might need to rework the roster to effectively shift to a 3-4 scheme, though a talent upgrade is likely going to be necessary on that side of the ball either way.

We could run a 3-4 if we grab CJ Mosley in FA, and then draft LB White in the first round this year. Vigil on one side, Lawson, blitzing backer on the other, and Mosely and White in the middle.

However, you need a big ass in the middle of that defense to anchor it on the line, so Atkins would effectively become a DE, along with Dunlap, and you stick the road grader in the middle to occupy multiple guys.

So you would have to have LB White, and a true NT, along with Mosely who is used to working in a 3-4 scheme.

Don't be ridiculous..... Geno Atkins does not fit in a 3-4 at all. You just paid him big money. Carlos Dunlap doesn't fit in a 3-4 at all and you just paid him big money. Hubbard and Lawson would have to be OLBs in a 3-4 and neither has any experience with it. And we don't have a nose tackle.

Our personnel doesn't fit 3-4....They weren't drafted for that scheme and it doesn't make much sense. I think Geno and Dunlap can anchor the line for another 3-4 years and I think Lawson and Hubbard need to play their natural positions.
