I'm a little behind on the PVR, so i just watched the 2nd intermission.
interesting segment with McLean and Bettman talking about all of these ownership issues.

you've got an 'investigative journalist' trying to pin down a weasel, with both of them trying to put on the best face for the camera. fascinating dynamic.

leave it to aw shucks ronnie to make me feel an ounce of empathy for Bettman. for me it came across as a weasel trying to pin down a weasel

I was waiting for ron to go through every team asking bettman about their financial health. these "during the finals one on ones" that happen every year need to go bye bye. not the time or the place ... lets celebrate the game

I enjoy watching 'The Gerbil' squirm under questioning as much as the next guy, but even that video got difficult to watch towards the end. The playoffs this year have been great, and the ratings (both in Canada and the US) reflect that. No mention that the game appears to be gaining traction in the States at all. I'd like to know if there are plans for Versus to be in more US markets, or if NBC might actually kick in a few bucks to air NHL games. There are plenty of other places to get updates regarding the Phoenix situation etc.

puck daddy has a good minute by minute review of the "debate" ... couldnt have made the bolded second point any better myself

Gary Bettman takes the decision, 6-5. He held his own during the interview's most contentious moments, coming off well-informed and counterpunching effectively.

And MacLean made the worst mistake you can make with Bettman, which is allowing the most loathsome commissioner in sports to come off as populist (the Winnipeg/Quebec City issue) and sympathetic (the playoffs have been great, so back off, man)

Wow, I would have never expected the Gary would have come off as more likeable than Ron. And he did, at least to me.

Thank goodness the players have Ron getting information for them.

That was interesting.

I couldn't help but notice that Bettman kept looking off Camera and occasionally coming up with new points when doing so...

I think if MacLean was really interested in hitting Bettman, he would have countered with Balsillie and why does Bettman hate him when Gary pointed out "Ownership that is interested" in Winnipeg.

I also thought the Olympics stuff was going to lead up to the TV contract and the Vs/Direct TV mess. But he just stopped.

It's almost like Ronnie had certain questions he was staying away from. Perhaps because the answers were not on Gary's cue cards.

Damn, any word if Grapes has backhanded Ron for such failure, yet? I almost wanted to give Gary a fistbump a couple times. All in all...."CRIPPLE FIGHT!"

cbc issues statement

please tsn/rogers ... get the HNIC broadcast rights so this putz can get back on the figure skating beat

CBC COMMUNICATIONS | Statement from Ron Maclean and CBC.

Statement from Ron Maclean and CBC.TORONTO, May 10, 2012 /CNW/ - As Hockey Night In Canada went to air for last night's game between Washington and New York, in his opening remarks, Ron MacLean described the on-going battle between the two teams and made reference to the respective cities, both of which were 9/11 targets.

Ron and CBC would like to clarify what may have been misunderstood by his comments.

"Washington and New York. The two cities united by the tragedy of 9/11. I, like everyone on the planet in his or her lifetime, saw beyond the horror, the single greatest testament to the strength of the human spirit in the efforts of the first responders", says Ron Maclean.

"We never know if we'll have that spirit. The bravery, the resilience. As I made clear, the hockey games in no way compare. However Sports has proven a worthy training ground in nurturing the qualities which beget that spirit. To say he plays like a firefighter or a policeman would instantly conjure the traits an athlete most desires, especially in New York and Washington. There could be no higher praise of a player, no greater choice of a role model .

But as I said of first responders, 'Our worst day is their everyday'. They stand alone."

I'm tired of his awkward and inappropriate metaphors, he tries too hard to be funny. His mancrush on Brad Richards is over the top as well.
