Simply Put

Lessor of two evils. The players might say they would rather deal with the head blows, but being a mental vegetable @ 45 or knee replacement?

The only resolution to this is the players have to cash in when they can...take as much from the game as you can, because the window is short...really short.

As long as there is a players union, it's only going to get worse. Take them away and the owners can make players sign contracts with stipulations that they are aware of the dangers of playing, and accept them. The owners have no other recourse at this point. I don't like the state of the game but if I'm an owner, I have no other option if I like making money.

It is posslble that they can set standards on what fields they have to work with...this is a billion dollar + business. I would guess the next option would to just play flag football to avoid some injuries. I might imagine in the future having boxing or MMA matches with oversized foam hand gloves.

That is why I said that they could at least set a bare minimum standard for fields across the NFL so that teams aren't playing on what essentially is a dirt field like in Oakland. I read that Washington actually redid their whole turf as they figured out that a layer of silt had settled in not allowing for proper water drainage that ended up making the surface way too soft leading to what happened to RGIII.

I don't think the NFL will ever get to the point of flag football. I do think they will get to the point where they will finally update some of the gear the players use such as the helmet. I have heard rumors that they are in the final testing stages of a helmet that is supposed to help protect a little more from concussions. If that is the case then maybe they can start to aim a little higher as players and take away the leg injuries as well. We shall see.

Exactly. If I had to choose between a knee replacement and being spoon-fed at 45 y.o...I'm going knee replacement.

Players are simply looking at the money they can make right now and what deters that. They don't give an ounce of thought about what their quality of life may be 20 years from now.

When you flag every mildly impactful hit above the waist, obviously more people will go low and get hurt low. That hit would have happened either way, though. It's the only way you bring down a dude like Gronk.

Fuck the players suing for concussions and fuck the league for overreacting and fuck the players union for not letting them keep common sense and add reasonable waivers that head trauma is likely from playing football. All three are ruining the game.

Many people can take repeated head trauma and be perfectly fine long term. Few can take repeated knee injuries and still walk. Let those who can handle the hits play and protect those who can't from themselves.

If there is an accountability clause in the contract, this is a moot point. I'm not saying there are no rules but these new rules are not as necessary. I also think they are then forced to reign in the PED use that is rampant in the league. 250 lb men running 4.5 forties are what's doing the most damage. Force x velocity = injury.

I seriously hope this post was a joke.

Exactly. Injuries will happen. It's a violent game. You don't need PEDs to be a 250lb 4.5er, though. I used to run a 4.7 at 220. This isn't particularly impressive, and while there's a decent way to go to add 30 pounds and drop a couple tenths on a 40, I was not top tier physical talent wise and didn't have access to a top tier training program. I have no doubt there are plenty of legitimate players who meet those thresholds.

On your other point about the union...the NFL is a protected monoply...why give them more authority?

Not really a big deal. I signed an accountability clause for Pepsi. I can't share trade secrets with Coke for instance. Is that unreasonable?

Very true...70% of NFL players go broke for one reason...the vast majority of the players on every team make league minimum, but that still amounts to a lifetime of money for average 30 yr working career. But, they make it in a very very short span, yet they spend it as if they will be making it for 20 yrs.
