I have to wonder if somewhere, Alex Smith wishes he would have been traded to the Steelers although it's unknown if that was part of this deal. Big Ben has to be happy he didn't get sent to that purgatory. San Fran was a shit show at that time.

Made sense at the time. But I would like to know what year specifically the trade was in the works…

Ben had 2 separate “incidents” within 2 years (2009 & 2010) and his value & reputation had plummeted. As much as anyone would hate to admit it, it wasnt a great look for the team to stand by him. My guess is this trade was the summer of 2010 in wake of his 2nd allegation. At the time he was still in a legal battle over the 1st incident. He looked DOA as soon as that 2nd allegation happened.

Super gloomy all around! Lots of people were done with him after the 09 incident. Then he wins a Super Bowl & proceeds to have another allegation the following summer… Nobody wanted to support him. The fact that the team did, especially in the face of all the harsh criticism that was to follow, was in hindsight amazing. His career could have been upended just 6 years in.

Nothing worse than the image of Unitas in a Chargers Uni, Rice in a Seahawks, Emmitt in a Cards and even Namath in a Rams uni.

It's interesting to remember the ups and downs of Ben's career in the first 6 years. The motorcycle accident, the various sexual assault allegations, the whispers of immaturity off the field. I wonder if this would have played out in this day and age whether he would have made it past those 6 years. The internet and social media were obviously a thing in 2010, but nothing like they are now.... And the pressure on the Rooney family was already pretty high in 2010, but these days it would be much, much worse.

See, I'm on the opposite end of that. Nobody thinks of Montana as a Chief or Rice as a Seahawk. Play until they stop paying you.

I'm not about to give another guy career advice. Especially since they'll never see that kind of money again. Obviously outside of guys that get great deals as commentators like Romo or Aikman.

Singletary was a great player but he was a terrible HC. He had no idea how to relate to players and would be even worse these days.

He is credited for turning around Vernon Davis and correcting his attitude though. About the only thing he ever accomplished as HC.
