It's actually Raiders.

It used to be Red Raiders, but the Oneida Indians complained.

They used to be the "Red-Raiders", but succumbed to political correctness and changed their mascot to just "Raiders".

I didn't know the had dropped "Red" from their name. All they had to do was change the imagery.

Did you know that before the Red Raiders were relegated to 1-AA (FCS) status, that their football series with Rutgers was the longest running continuous series in college football?

So with this being said, which came first Colgate the toothpaste company or Colgate the University?

Are the two related?

It's kind of complicated. William Colgate first started selling soap, starch & candles on the streets of New York City in 1806, but he may not have started using the name "William Colgate & Company" until 1819. He helped found & support a seminary in NYC at some point.

Meanwhile, in upstate New York, 13 men founded the Baptist Educational Society of the State of New York, and in 1819, Hamilton, NY, was chosen as the site of their first school. It was a training school that did not confer degrees. Four years later, the seminary in NYC decided to merge with Hamilton Literary & Theological Institute. It was opened to non-ministerial students in 1839.

In 1846 the school was re-named Madison University and was given approval to start granting degrees. William Colagate & his family were staunch supporters & benefactors of the college through the years. After his death in 1857 his company was re-named Colgate & Company, and they didn't enter the oral hygiene field until 1973.The college was re-named Colgate University in 1890 because of all the support it had received from the family over the years.
