It was a catch-22 situation. The Jets had a pretty good WHA team (won the last AVCO Cup in '79), but the team was gutted as they could only protect two players from that championship team. Of course, if that doesn't happen, they probably don't draft Dale Hawerchuk.

Favourite player on my favourite team when the Jets came into the league. Haven't watched the NHL in 25+ seasons, but I'll always remember his talent as well as the fact that he was a class act.
