Reports: Former Blackshirt, Husker broadcaster Adrian Fiala dies - Omaha.com: Big Red Today - Husker Football News, Schedules And Videos
Adrian Fiala, a former Husker and Omaha native who went on to a memorable career broadcasting Nebraska athletics, has reportedly died.
Fiala was a two-sport star for the Huskers in the late 1960s. He was a four-time Blackshirt on the Nebraska football team. During his senior year on the baseball field, Fiala led the Huskers with a .325 batting average.
Current Nebraska broadcaster Greg Sharpe posted the news to Twitter on Monday afternoon:
The official Twitter account of the Huskers shared Sharpe's post, adding that the team sends its "deepest condolences to the family of Adrian Fiala."
Following Sharpe's announcement, there was an outpouring of love for Fiala from both former Huskers and those close to the program.
Fiala provided color commentary for Husker football broadcasts from 1996 to 2010. He worked with play-by-play announcers Warren Swain, Jim Rose and Greg Sharpe over that time.
“He had been great to me — really opened his arms to me and accepted me into the Husker family, ’’ Sharpe said in 2010. “I just respected his wealth of knowledge and background with the program, and appreciated how he was prepared for broadcasts.’’
One of a rare breed, he played football and baseball at Nebraska, where he was a three-year letterman at linebacker and three-year letterman as a catcher. He was an academic All-American in football and second-team academic All-American in baseball.
