Todd McShay: Sweet spot for OL is late first round of 2015 NFL draft - ESPN
John Keim posted an interesting article on drafting offensive tackles in this May's draft. One key observation is that Brandon Scherff, whom many have on the Redskins radar when they pick at #5, may really be ideal as a guard. That's because he's got some issues that may limit his optimal effectiveness as an OT. If so, Scherff is not a value pick at #5 by any stretch of the imagination. Because he's not, picking up a defender like Shane Ray or Randy Gregory might be in order here (though I've heard Gregory may be somewhat of a project). Of course, if Leonard Williams falls to #5, that's a no-brainer.
This then leads to the next point: in order to assess what we need to do in the draft to improve our o-line, there are two major questions that need to be answered. Are our current crop of young o-linemen -- i.e., Spencer Long, Josh Leribeus, and Morgan Moses -- capable of starting soon? As for Moses, he's clearly not -- at least not yet. Long may be and Leribeus may be a better fit at center.
If this is how McCloughan is viewing things, he should make a strong push to get Mike Iupati or Orlando Franklin for one of our guard spots. As for RT, we can wait until the second round to pick what would otherwise be a solid choice to replace that stiff Polumbus. The article makes this point quite cogently and ticks off the several options we'd have if we waited until our second round pick, which would be 38th overall. While there are many ifs and buts here, we could have a line that looks like this: Trent, Long, Lichtensteiger, Iupati, second round OT pick (e.g., Andrus Peat). If Lichtensteiger can't cut it any more at center, put in Leribeus to see what he can do at center. He's much beefier than Lichtensteiger and some view center as being a spot where he can do well at.
Anyways, these are my late-night ramblings on this issue. I hope I haven't wasted anyone's time.
Cheers!
Post-script: what to do about safety and NT? Hmmmm . . . maybe make a push for Devin McCourty and/or Dan Williams in FA or someone in the draft.
