So I guess it wasn’t psychological. But does seem weird that is they are deciding now to have surgery. It seems like it is an either quicker timeline or much longer timeline.

They found more damage in a different area of the tendon on the last checkup.

Well that is a big pile of money spent with very little return.

Hope he gets fixed up and makes a great return / comeback.

Going after Ohtani early this summer is even more pressing. Solves a starting pitching hole and fills our glaring weakness at the DH position.
They should make a hefty offer ( more $$ than prospects )

Sadly likely very true.

The gate receipts from signing Ohtani would be substantial so hopefully they factor that in as he will be a big draw to the Asian fans as well as baseball fans in general. I can see an extra 5-7000 fans showing up with him on the roster and the Mariners in a playoff race all summer.

likely an extra 10,000 fans on games he takes the bump.

At $50 a ticket ( pretty cheap by T-Mobile standards) that is an extra 1/2 million per home game with 10K extra fans in attendance.
40 games = $20mil

They can't wait until July to either go get someone, or bring up a prospect. Flex can't keep dragging this team down and still contend.

I wish the dead end Tigers hadn't given Matthew Boyd all that money and a gig. He would be really useful to have right now.

One bonus is we don't have to listen to Ray grunt all year or his weirdo almost translucent pants when he pitches.

Its official he is getting Tommy John Surgery which is about a 14-16 month recovery usually a career killer for pitchers. Atleast he signed his deal before this happened but it looks like this could be an opportunity for Bryce Miller or even Emerson Hancock.

I hear the time line on his return is 12 to 16 months because of the extra damage found. So if everything goes right cleared by May and probably ready by June the earliest and if not on the wrong end of timing, he'll miss all of next season. What a waste.

I guess the silver-lining in all of this is that he has already been underwhelming as our big-FA-signing Ace... its not like we're losing Gerrit Cole, here...

I wouldn’t say it’s a career killer at all nowadays. Obviously doesn’t work for everyone but a lot pitchers have come back better than before like Munoz and Verlander
