Opinion: The Baltimore Ravens Have a Major Joe Flacco Problem

The Baltimore Ravens have a major Joe Flacco problem, even if they don't realize it or want to admit it. Since going on his four-game streak to win the Super Bowl after the 2012 season, and getting a big contract, Flacco has been among the worst regular starters in the NFL, and the Ravens have not won another playoff game.

Here's where he ranks among the 33 quarterbacks who have thrown at least 800 passes in the last five years:

-dead last in yards per attempt;

-dead last in touchdown pass percentage;

-dead last in touchdown to interception ratio;

-32nd in passer rating (ahead of only Blake Bortles);

-dead last in net yards per pass attempt;

-dead last in adjusted net yards per pass attempt.

Does this make Joe Flacco elite?

Last year, he averaged 5.7 yards per pass attempt. Let's put that in some perspective. Ryan Leaf's career yards per attempt was 5.6, and JaMarcus Russell's was 6.0.

Houston has a problem with the QB posiion. Flacco did OK until he got paid.

....Flacco won a playoff game in 2014 (which was also his best year statistically)

Won't get any complaints from me that he hasn't lived up to his contract, although it's not all his fault

ELITE is a state-of-mind, not a quaint statistic like YPA. Peasants.

They've had a Flacco problem ever since the SB.

One of the dumbest signings if not the dumbest the Ravens had ever done.

EXTREMELY mediocre/average QB, gets hot for 3-4 games after going an 'impressive 10-6' after almost missing the playoffs, almost loses the Super Bowl if the 49ers didn't pull a Seahawks (k not THAT bad, but close) and the Ravens throw him an absolutely absurd contract. I remember facepalming hard when I saw the details of that contract.

Yeah, that's such a weird situation.

It's like if everyone just closes their eyes and pretends that situation isn't happening - they think it will go away.

Flacco is under contract for a non-guaranteed $12M in 2018. The Ravens also have a 2019 option on him. If they don't want him in 2018 they'll release him after May 8. So...what's the problem?

If they don't want Flacco in 2018 they could bring in another cheap veteran to battle RG3 for the starting job and probably add a developmental rookie. I don't see them dropping Flacco though. I'd still rather have him at $12M than Manning, Tannehill, Dalton, and maybe 1 or 2 more on more expensive contracts.

Flacco's 33 and RG III is a backup at this point in his career. I can see the Ravens picking a QB during the draft this year and letting go of Flacco in 2019.
