Bullpen Failure is back, lurking like Gollum
After a very successful series in Philadelphia to begin the season the Rangers head to Baltimore. A lot has gone right so far this season, and a few things have gone wrong. Overall, the team has played well.
Most of the offense either has performed well or hasn't played enough to make a judgment. Wyatt Langford and Josh Jung are rhe only guys struggling who have had at least 9 plate appearances. If those two guys get going this offense could go from very good to great.
It is probably a good thing the offense is doing well because Skip Schumaker currently doesn't have anyone he trusts that can make us feel comfortable that they are pitching late in the game. I think last year the offense caused the weak back of the pen look even weaker due to having to be depended on to close out very low scoring games so frequently. Hopefully, this year will be different in that respect. Overall, the bullpen is doing great, though.
Last night I quoted a tweet from The Prospect Times about how well the pitching staff has done. Someone on Twitter responded to that tweet saying, "okay, now do that for the bullpen" with the insinuation being that the pen has struggled. I quickly ran some numbers and responded giving the following stats for the bullpen.
ErA 0.69
WHIP 1.23
BAA .170
Jack Leiter goes tonight and hopefully he does very well. I am hoping for:
5.1 innings
2 runs
4 hits
2 walks
6 strike outs
Okay, lets get Langford and Jung going ,and let's settle down Carter Baumler's control and have another great series.
There is still no word on if deGrom will start, but I doubt he will. It will be very interesting to see how Rocker responds to Latz throwing down the gauntlet, so to speak.
The Orioles will go with two RHP to start the series so I guess we will get to see Evan Carter play on back to back days. I wonder if Pederson will start both of those games or will McCutchen play, even against a RHP. In one of them.
