Bullpen Failure is back, lurking like Gollum
The Rangers stumble into town to take on a team very similar to them in winning percentage. Both teams come into the series having won 4 of their last 10 games.
This is a team that could give the Rangers some trouble. They are second in MLB in OPS and lead in HRs. They are fifth in batting average. Although today's Nationals' starting pitcher is very inexperienced and struggled some in AAA this year, their next two starting pitchers have ERAs well below 4.00.
Once again, the Rangers pitching plans for this series is up in the air. As of now, they have Quantrill scheduled to pitch this evening. Normally, deGrom and Rocker would follow. DeGrom continues to have issues with his hip/glute and may not be able to pitch tomorrow. Yesterday being an off day could allow them to simply move Rocker and Gore up and let them both start on the traditional 4 days rest. Or they could bring someone up to start. Or they could just throw a bullpen game. I guess switching spots with Rocker and deGrom could be a possibility if they simply need to give deGrom an extra day.
I originally thought the Rangers would win two of these games, but they may have to settle for one win. If the Rangers can't beat up on Jackson Kent this evening, watch out. That could make for a very ugly series.
However, the Nationals pen ranks near the bottom of the league. Their bullpen's ERA is a full run worse than the Rangers bullpen. The Rangers best chance is for our pitching to hold the very good Nationals' offense in check until our offense can break through against the Nationals' pen. That might be a lot easier said than done, though.
The Rangers enter this series in a three-way tie for the third wildcard spot. The fight for the third wildcard is a jumbled mess at this point. Anong all those teams, the Bluejays have been the hottest. They have gone 7-3 over their last 10 games. Detroit and Baltimore have gone 5-5 in that same span.

The Orioles will have a challenging series with the Yankees this week. The Tigers travel to play the Pirates. The Twins have to face the Braves. The Blue Jays will be challenged with playing the Rays this week. Cleveland will try to make up ground playing the hapless Giants. The Mariners have the very tough challenge of facing the Brewers. The Tigers and Cleveland seem to be poised to have the best series among the challengers. We will see how all of this pans out over the next three days.
