20/20 hindsight ... would have been a good night to start Gonzalez and Snyder at 3rd and 1st. Would give Young or Napoli 2 days off before the @ CHW series. But am sure TEX thought it was putting its best lineup out there to support Yu's AS voting.

You know we'd all be raising hell if he hadn't.

Okay, but once is kick leg starts towards home does he not have to go home? Every time he'd start home and throw to first. Sometimes he'd go home anyways, but he was obviously still looking for a chance to throw over.

As long as the front foot does not go behind the rear leg ... he can go to first without it being called a balk ... no matter where that front foot steps. Blackly actually steps 45deg between Home and First.

Umps watch to see that when the front foot goes behind the rear leg that the weight shift commits the pitcher to going to the plate. If there is no weight shift because the front foot is still in front ... then pitcher can go either to the plate or to first. In the process of the throw to first the pitcher's foot must come off the rubber before he lets go of the ball or it's also a balk.

I learned something today.

Well ... maybe some of us would have raised hell ... those who thought MY at the hot corner and Napoli's freezing cold bat were the keys to victory. Might have worked out. Sometimes when things aren't happening you need to shake things up. Snyder and Gonzalez would have shaken things up.

TEX had to be seen to be supporting Yu's AS voting ... and that meant Young and Napoli. There will be other chances. Frustrating though when it appears to the fans that the team isn't focused in the field or at bat.

yes/no. The front foot can not go behind the back leg...that part is correct. However, the pitcher must step no greater than a 45* angle to be able to make a pickoff attempt. Anything more than 45* (say 50, 60, etc) would be considered a balk.

The thing about his pick off move that is so unique is the head fake. Never seen a pitcher do that before and evidently neither had the Rangers. Torrealba was so surprised by it that it was almost funny watching him get picked off..almost.

The head fake is a great move ... apparently the umpires don't see the head move as part of "any natural motion associated with his delivery of the ball to the batter commits him to the pitch without alteration or interruption" (8.01b).

Wasn't funny seeing him getting picked off. Was funny seeing Yorvit the Turtle on his back half way between first and second.

Never understood the going to the ground between bases. If he misses the tag do you think you'll be able to get up and outrun him?

Believe Elvis successfully did it once a year or two ago...ever since then, they all do it. Well, I at least think I see it more often nowadays.

I'm sick of seeing Michael Young play in the field. He simply has no business playing defense and why Wash keeps putting him in the field when the overall team defense has been so bad is one of the years bigger mysteries. I honestly thought Wash would see the light after MY's game 6 WS hatchet job last year, but for some reason he continues to get a free pass. Even the guys (TAG) in the TV booth give him a free pass with the "ball took a bad hop" BS.

Vid from this mornings BBTIA piece shows the beauty of his recent ole move ... both guys in the booth are shameful homers and spinsters. MY's failure to field or at least knock the ball down constituted the damage that cost Yu the win.

Could easily happen again ... and if you are spending $120 mil on player salaries in 2012 (up $28mil from 2011) ... and paying Beltre $15mil to play 3b ... then when he's out play the best defenders in his place. They are Alberto Gonzalez or Brandon Snyder.

Another thing viewing the video ... why was MY playing RH hitter Derek Norris on the edge of the IF grass?

Playing for the bunt possibility. If I remember correctly, there was a man on 2nd with no outs... bunt puts the man on 3rd with 1 out.

Yes... Smith doubled in front of Norris. With 1b empty though there would not be a force at 3rd ... so am not sure there is an advantage of playing in to defend a bunt and allow Smith to advance to 3rd ... or to play a normal depth and if the bunt is laid down being in position to field a throw should Smith try to advance and let the catcher make the call once the ball is laid down and Yu fields it.

You do realize wash is the one that makes that call right?

Yea I know ... with the same result as when MY played SS with the infield in. But you know it pains Wash to see Young unable to make those plays.

Range and reaction time shortfalls coupled with rundown miscues have signaled the only safe spot is DH.

I think wash thinks PADMY is a perfectly capable fielder. :L

Whether he believes MY is a "perfectly capable" fielder or not ... Wash has to balance all the "dynamics" ... and sometimes things just don't work out.

Didn't see the post game interview so not sure if anyone asked about the play ... but am sure Wash would support MY regardless of what he personally thinks about the play.

MY has to know that he sucks defensively....And if he was the team guy that everybody has been hood winked into believing he is then he would take himself out of the fielding rotation and sit his ass on the bench tomorrow and never even look at a glove... ever again.
It's pretty obvious that Wash is going to support Young 100%, regardless. It's also pretty obvious that MY should have never seen the field again after game 6 last year. However, asking Wash about MY's declining skills would be like asking Jerry Jones when he's going to hire a real GM. A total waste of time.

we get it, Al, you hate MY with a passion and can see nothing good about him but to continue to whine about him in almost every thread is getting old. Wash and JD and Nolan obviously don't agree with your assessment and as they are the ones making the decisions, to continue harping on it is a total waste of your energy
