to get a stud OL in L. Collins when they passed on him in round 7. The guy is a beast and looks pretty damn good in camp and also in last night's opening preseason game @ San Diego! We didn't have anything to lose in that round, either he makes it or he gets cut. The Cowboys got a steal!

3 thoughts

1. its preseason
2. should we wait to see what we have first to compare with? what if everybody is better
3. steals seem always great at first but never seem to be great later (aka a jenkins)

It probably would've been an unpopular move among basically every player in the NFL. He was a known top 50 talent who hit some really bad timing. He probably wouldnt have signed and the Rams would've looked bad imo

He very well could've held out if drafted. It definitely would've been contentious.

So what if he held out? We're talking about a 7th rounder here. Our 6th rounder this season will never even see the field and has retired, last years seventh rounder couldn't even hack it in the CFL. This years 7th rounder is looking like a sure cut.
What exactly did we have to lose? If the guy wanted to sit out a year and be drafted again next year, so be it. I'm betting he would've signed with us eventually.

Rams' 7th rounders (Hager and Ifedi) are both showing promise.

Nobody touched Collins in the draft. It's not like the Rams were the only team with a shot.

but they were the team reported to be considering drafting him in the 7th and decided to pass when his agent threatened not to sign.

the point is, most 7th rounders are a long shot to make the team anyways. why not call their bluff ( which they came out and said they would've signed if a team had drafted him ) and get a far better talent than a typical 7th rounder- especially when the need for OL was so huge even with them drafting 4.

Even if he would've signed, it probably would've only been a 1 year contract, due to the terrible salary slot. It was going to be a headache no matter what.

Ifedi is really going to be a good one and Hager has finally got the message that if he wants a roster spot he has to EARN it and not just go on his last name as he once thought. Keep an eye on Donnal and Wichmann. Wichmann is quietly having a decent camp and Donnal is going to make the roster for sure.

I'm still not sold on the guys we drafted. To me drafting 4 (or 5 I guess) doesn't matter at all if you reach every single time and pass up taking the top OL on the board each time a OL was taken.

Evidently, that wasn't the case on their board.

They drafted players they felt "fit the scheme" which is why the reached for a bunch of "run blockers" instead of the "best available overall linemen"

I mean it's not a bad plan, you get guys that can work together and be good to great in one facet of the game, in this case the run game.

Then you get a guy like Paul Boudreau to get them youngins to work together in pass pro.

We now have an Offensive line that can grow as one unit not worrying too much about injuries that come with father time.

How do you know those weren't the top guys on their board?

Yeah I love that the "Rams" missed an opportunity on a guy that's never played a snap in the NFL. Well so did 30 other teams. I think we have to look at the facts rather than just fly by the seat of our pants.

Because they were rated lower then players left. Obviously they haven't been playing that well. Brown's been the doing the best (which I'm happy about since I wasn't a big fan of drafting him)

Rated lower by who though? Every team has their own evaluation that fits their scheme, style, and needs.

Lower ratings based on those who have a strong reputation in rating players. Drafting/Scouting is a major part of football now. There's a ton of analytics on these kind of things.

And let's be honest, we don't have a great track record drafting (especially linemen) (We do do well with Dlinemen though)
