49ers Give Raheem Mostert a Raise

I think Mostert is a very good runner in this offense, so glad to retain him WITHOUT furtherissue. However, don't like that it sets a precedence going forward. ie IF Lynch had decided to stand pat, i would've been ok with that too. Would've hurt not having Mostert but you have to think of the TEAM.

Anyway, incentives is the only "compromise" they could've taken. Giving Mostert an outright raise definitely sets a bad precedence.

The problem is actually Tevin Coleman getting too much money, he might be steady at best but not worth his contract. To me, they should've traded Coleman and kept Breida, or just traded both. With Coleman gone, Mostert wouldn't have as strong a case.

Oh well....................

I'm glad to keep him, especially after losing Brieda. I don't think much of Coleman

Mostest is the fastest RB in the NFL something that gets ignored. While at Purdue he won the Big10 100/200, his 10.2ish 100m PR superior to any other current NFL RB.

Why it took him so long to catch on, is a ?????? to me.

Track and field[edit]

As a track athlete under coach Brendan Robinson, Mostert was a standout sprinter, hurdler, and jumper. He won the 2010 FHSAA 3A District 6 title in the 300-meter hurdles.[9] At the 2011 FHSAA 3A Outdoor State Finals, he finished first in the 100 meters, with a time of 10.68 seconds, and placed fourth in the 300-meter hurdles, with a personal-best time of 37.95 seconds.[10]

He was a member of the Purdue track team. He was ranked by NFL.com as the fastest college football player in the NCAA, with only Oklahoma State wide receiver Tyreek Hill possessing a faster 100m time (9.98 s). He took gold in both the 60 meters (6.63s) and 200 meters (20.73s) at the 2014 Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships.[11] He qualified for the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 100 meters (10.15s), 200 meters (20.65s) and as a member of 4x100-meter relay squad.[12]

All of this doesn't matter once you get into the NFL, but what does matter now is his ability in Shannahan's run game. There is no one better on the outside zone runs, we know this when the other RB's try to go outside.

BTW - the 49er fan base already knew he was a fast runner, but running track and running in the NFL isn't the same.

With his injury history, if he were in a foot race with Scotty Miller, he would blow his knee, Achilles, and hip all halfway through the race.

Speed will always matter regardless of what league; If a kid comes into the NFL running a 4.38 40l, in a few years he is now at 4.58, if a guy comes into the league running a 4.50 in a few seasons 4.70.

See how it goes?

Jonathan Taylor ran track and he also had the fastest 40 at the combine.....4.39. He also gained more yards as a rookie than any other rokkie RB,

Adrian Peterson
Marshall Faulk
Eric Dickerson
Gale Sayers
Bo Jackson
O.J.Simpson

Track guys.

Watch Tyreek Hill Sunday, speed is a very big deal in football.

Speed in a vacuum is of course important, but as i said earlier, track speed and football speed aren't the same. Some can run track VERY fast, but it isn't as fast on the football field. We already know Mostert is FAST but i'm saying track versus football whereas you're on track.

Mostert can run the outside zone and it ain't only his speed. Other 49er RB's or former RB's can run fast too, but they're not as good as Mostert running outside.

You're not getting this at all.

The faster an athlete is entering pro football. the longer he will be fast. 4.3 40 guys slow down to 4.5 guys. 4.5 guys slow down to a 4.7.

Tyreek Hill, Bob Hayes were college running backs, why did they become pro WR. yep......speed!!!!

Hell yes having a background in speed training matters and it's totally obvious.

Mostert's Big10 track exploits have been talked about by tv announcers ......why?

Mostest can go 90 yards, no DB can run him down, why are you struggling with that?

Why do they run the 40.....well?

Shanahan's ego got in the way with the Coleman/Brieda affair. That's the only thing I can think of because the decision was inexplicable

I agree. I didn't understand that move. Both had durability issues, but Brieda was a better RB.

I thought he was the best on the team when healthy. I really like mostert and Wilson though

i liked Breida over Coleman, but not over Mostert. Mostert is the best RB for the outside zone and IMO, by a big margin.

we can only hope Elijah Mitchell can be good outside too? After seeing highlights of Sermon, he doesn't strike me as good an outside guy? not saying he can't run outside, but seems he's much better 'inside'.

I think Brieda averaged something like 8 yards a carry a couple of years ago?

Loved Brieda, pissed when we let him go. Yep, dumb!!!!
Remember the first play of the Cleveland game the year the Niners went to the Super Bowl? That was classic Brieda
