I wasn't on the Hoop when Dolph Schayes passed. His real first name was Adolph, but after WW2, everyone with that name changed it.

Living in Syracuse, New York, I had the fortune to see him play live more than 50 times. For those of you who are too young to remember his name, I want to pay tribute to him.

He was on the 50th year anniversary list as one of the 50 greatest players.

Schayes started playing in the NBA before the 24 second shot clock was implemented. Those games were awful and in 1954, the shot clock was put in to speed up the game.

Schayes had basically two shots. His most famous was his two handed shot from about where the 3 point line is today. They had to screen for him, since he wasn't the fastest player on the court. When he lined up to take the shot, the crowd started to roar in the War Memorial Coliseum as it was evident what was about to occur.

His other shot was his drive to the basket from about 15 out with a layup. My dad, who was not a fan of the Syracuse Nationals, also screamed that he was walking. In retrospect he probably was.

Dolph, you were my childhood hero. I will miss you.
