Indeed

I know there are PIT fans that were fans prior to Noll taking over, but he was the man in charge when I 1st started watching the Steelers in the early 70s and he ushered in championship caliber football to the Steeltown... he set the standard the franchise strives for every year now.

RIP...Chuck Noll

''As for the football end of it, I think he ranks with (George) Halas and (Vince) Lombardi,'' Steelers owner Dan Rooney said Saturday. ''There are many other good coaches over the history of the NFL, but I think Chuck Noll ranks up there with those other two guys right at the top. No other coach won four Super Bowls, and the way he did it was with dignity. His players were always his concern, both in treating them well and giving them what they needed to succeed on the field.''

First Nunn… Now Noll… Sad days in PIT history… A true legend, a founding father, and a great friend to this organization.

RIP Coach… Thanks for all the memories.

As much as I hated the Steelers for Super Bowls X and XIII, I had a lot of respect for Mr. Noll.

Chuck Noll and Tom Landry...both were great, old-school coaches. When they went head to head, you were guaranteed to see great football.

And yup, we're giving away our ages, admitting that we remember those two SBs.

When you talk about the greatest coaches that ever coached at this level, Noll is conspicuous by his absence. People are quick to throw out Lombardi, Walsh, Landry, Parcells...and you'll even here Belichick.

No one mentions Noll - as if he inherited the team with all this talent on it. Quite the opposite is true.

According to Andy Russell, "Noll came in and said, 'The reason you're not winning is because you're not good enough and I'm going to get rid of most of you'".

Two men survived: Russell and Rocky.

And he even made adjustments to Russell. He called him into his office and Russell was fresh off a probowl trip and Noll looked at him and said, "I don't like the way you play. You play sloppy. I'm going to make you better".

Rocky, for his part, had part of his lower leg blown off in Vietnam and worked his ass off for years to get back on the field. Noll and the Rooney's were willing to let him work as hard and as long as he wanted since that was his dream. They weren't going to take it away.

Yes, Noll added 9 HoFers to that team in his time but let's not pretend that all it takes it talent.

Bradshaw, believe it or not, could have been the fastest man on the team when he was drafted in 1970. He had a huge arm but he was rough. Mean Joe needed to be tamed a bit.

Noll had to develop all that talent, harness the power and keep all the egos in check.

He wasn't a man that believed in pregame speeches or that rah-rah stuff on the sidelines.

"He gave the same speech before every game, 'OK, we've worked hard all week and we know what to do so let's go do it.' Halftime was more of the same, 'OK, we've made the adjustments, let's go do it" - Rocky Blier.

"This one day we were having a horrible practice and at the end of it Chuck comes over and says, 'There were these two squirrels. One lived up way high in the branches and the other lived on the ground. That's what we need to do - get back to basics so come back tomorrow and that's what we'll do'. I looked around at the rest of the guys and we all had the same confused look on our faces. I kept thinking, 'well, happened to the squirrels? If we come to practice tomorrow do we find out what happened to the squirrels?'" - Rocky Blier. :noidea:

You see, Chuck Noll didn't need pregame or half time speeches. If you did what he told you to do, the way he told you to do it, you were going to win.

He had those men as sharp as a razors. They practiced perfect technique in practice and executed to perfection the way it was drawn up. Had we not had injuries in '76 that could have been the greatest team of all time.

Coaching is taking what's in your head and translating that into the actions of your players.

IMHO, Noll never got enough credit.

Even after those teams left, he continued to win. He still had an eye for talent - picked up some guy named Rod Woodson. I understand he was pretty good.

I don't know that he was better than Lombardi (6 championships in 9 years) but I think he's, at the very least, as good or better than Walsh. I'd take Noll over just about anyone, any day of the week.
