I think they are making something outta nothing. Kap was clearly not ready to play in the NFL after watching his performance last night. Alex might not be the cream of the crop but he's certainly giving us the best chance to win right now. We could really damage Kap's progression by throwing him to the wolves. Last night he looked below average against 3rd stringers and guys who likely would never make an NFL team, imagine how he'd do against starters and pro bowlers.

hahaha... I definitely agree with this assessment, Sickness. How many times has the writers been mentioning how Harbaugh refuses to to divulge any information or tip his hand on anything - may it be injury reports or personnel issues. This is just extremely lazy conjectures from an over eager blogger. I guess journalism is not what it used to be

FWIW, Kevin Lynch is saying the same thing:

Harbaugh said during the draft that if he were a betting man, he would put his money on the veteran Smith to win the job. At that time, Harbaugh might still have been recruiting Smith to stay with the 49ers. Now, after one game, in which Kaepernick seemed to handle the pressure better, Harbaugh was asked if he retains the same mindset he held during the draft on his quarterback situation.

"Yeah, it would be right now, you know it's letting that play out," Harbaugh said somewhat haltingly. Harbaugh also remarked that being in a veteran quarterback is a possibility."

They are making news out of nothing because it's been clear from the start the QB depth chart was never set in stone.

All Harbaugh has said is Smith would be the favorite to win the job and from all indications that still likely be the case. Kap didn't exactly go out there and rip it from him and showed he still needs time to acclimate to the NFL game himself.

Considering neither QB performed well it's clear the problem is on the offense as a whole and just needs more time in the oven to cook.
