noOut of curiosity, would that be an illegal hit today, since Dareus is leading with his helmet?

Actually the answer is yes. Any tackle that the defender leads with the crown of their helmet would be considered an illegal hit. Probably an illegal hit at the time it took place also based on that picture.
No, it's not an illegal hit then or now. He hit him in the shoulder, not in the head and neck area.
Texas fans are some funny ****.
1st of all it does not matter and it isnt going to change anything, but it is illegal. I am not sure why people think where you hit a player is the important part of the rules. Any hit where a defender leads with the crown of his helmet is illegal, whether or not that is how they enforce the rule. This is the exact type of tackle that people are trying to get take out of the game for safety reasons.
What is Spearing?
A penalty called when a defensive player makes a tackle that leads with the crown of his helmet into the offensive player. If the initial contact occurs at the top of the helmet, the tackle is illegal. Spearing is a 15-yard penalty against the defense and an automatic first down. The penalty is considered a player safety issue, as hits that lead with the top of the helmet often result in injuries.
Never gets called inside the tackle box, mostly because it is so hard to see, but it has been illegal for a long time.

If you watch the video and think this is an illegal tackle, then

I just looked at the picture. It appears that the defender is clearly leading with the crown of his helmet. If you think that is a proper tackle I am not sure what to tell you. Not sure why looking at it faster is going to make it clearer, that is odd logic indeed. Its 5 years in the past, no idea why you Bama guys get your panties in bunch over stuff like this.
Not a head shot

So a single picture is more telling than a video of the entire play?

Doesn't matter. If you lead with your head, even to the chest, it isn't considered a clean hit. It sucks but it is what college football has come to.
You mean the picture that actually shows that he lead with the crown of the helmet, opposed to the video where you can not see that due to the angle? I would say yes. I told you this would never get called, but it is illegal and is the exact thing anyone involved in coaching football is trying take out of the game.

Rules about leading with the head were established a long time ago. They never headed them back 50 years ago, because you would never do that with a leather helmet. Its just not a technique that you want to see players use. Its actually more dangerous for the tackler than the runner.
This is why I have always maintained I would prefer to just see a wrap rule, instead of the current rules. Hard to lead with the crown or hit someone just in the helmet if you are attempting to wrap up a player
