NFLPA to agents: Players should save money

I was at a radio sports talk remote a couple of years ago and former NFL/UGA player now radio show host, Randy McMichael said the players will have to sit out a year to ever make any serious gains. He doesn't see that ever happening because far too many players have hand-to-mouth type finances.

Well, the NFLPA appears to be posturing, but they've never really put out a communication as pointed as this one. They have 3 seasons remaining under the current CBA....after the '21 season, maybe they finally get serious and force the owners to miss some revenue as well.

Posturing is all this is. The players have no leverage. The salary cap keeps increasing, the highest paid player in the league basically keeps changing every year. There's nothing more they can ask for other than taking marijuana off the list of banned substances, but that's not going to warrant a year-long lockout.

IDK...the players do want to see pot taken off the banned list, but also they want to reduce Goodell's' power, the Franchise tag reworked, and get more guaranteed money.

I just don’t see how the players have it “that bad” that the owners are taking advantage of them. Look, I’m not siding with the owners but what do the players want that they need to go on strike for a year or more?

Maybe they push for allowing domestic violence?

I'm sure they do want it, but at the end of the day, they're not going to give up a year's salary to try and make a point.

That's why it won't happen.

I was listening to the local Columbus sports radio while I was mowing earlier today and James Laurinaitis has a show. He mentioned how this isn't the first time a letter like this has been sent out to the players before. He said the NFL is too big of a monster and the players are just making too much for this to be a thing.

Some here say the players should do as little as possible and be paid out the wazoo

What I'm hearing the most.

  • players prefer a committee to decide player discipline...i.e. reduce the power of the commissioner
  • revisit the Franchise Tag control
  • bigger slice of the pie, currently getting less than 50% (reportedly 48.5%)
  • more guaranteed money
  • a segment wants to see pot taken off the banned list.

I'm pretty sure this public announcement is more posturing than anything else. I agree with Randy Mac and you that it won't happen but the NFL CBA relative to other team sports leagues is still favoring the owners.

Got to love union posturing.:rolleyes2:
Especially the weak ass NFLPA.
Players will not strike for a year.
They have way too much to lose.
Note the owners aren't putting out a memo to save a years salary.

eh, not sure I agree with some of the sentiments in this thread. Granted, I will give you the fact that the NFLPA is one of the weakest in all of sports and that may, once again, lead to them not striking.

However, it must be grinding a lot of the players that MLB players get fully guaranteed contracts upwards of $300 mill + and NBA stars are now making $40 mill per.

To be fair, in the NFL, the players have to share the 'pie' more than MLB and NBA because rosters are larger, but the players may feel the fact that their league generates so much more revenue than the other 2, that they are getting screwed.

Not sure if this makes me a dick, but I'm glad it favors the owners. It should. They're the ones who keep paying higher and higher salaries every year and updating venues. I don't care if they're already loaded, it's still their money. When a guy like Dak Prescott is being talked about as a $30mm a year guy, the players have more than plenty.

Then here's a thought - go play basketball or baseball.

They don't get fully guaranteed salaries because the chance of injury is far too high - see Todd Gurley. This is called smart business on the owners' parts. NFL players will be hitting $40m per year within the next couple years, so I'm not worried about that part.
