I dont know if this is a problem for you guys, but I hate this system. I dont understand how a team gets a free point for just making it to OT, that needs to be changed IMO. One get a point if you lose a Shoot Out. If they did that I think the Point overall would reflect the team better. It also would make things much more interesting...

If they did it this way here is who the playoff standings would look.

West
1. Vancouver - 109
2. San Jose - 99
3. Detroit - 96
4. LA - 94
5. Anaheim - 92
6. Chicago - 91
7. Phoenix - 90
8. Nashville - 90
9. Calgary - 89
10. Dallas - 87

East
1. Washington - 102
2. Philadelphia - 99
3. Boston - 96
4. Pittsburgh - 97
5. Tampa Bay - 94
6. Montreal - 89
7. NYRangers - 89
8. Buffalo - 83
9. Carolina - 83

Maybe this is not an issue, but I hate the free point for OT.

I despise the current point system. I think all games need to be worth the same amount of points, whether it be 1, 2, or 3 or whatever. I've seen many suggestions on how to make it that way. While I like some more than others, I really don't care that much which one they go with as I'd like any of them better than the current format. I don't care if they have ties. I don't care if they keep or get rid of the shootout. Just make all games worth the same number of points please!

That being said, your rankings appear to be based on the assumption that under a different format the games would all have identical outcomes. I don't think that is a huge stretch, but under a different system teams would likely play a bit differently and not all games would end up with the same result.

Screw the "equal points for equal games" mentality.

5 points for a shutout win
4 points for a win with an ENG in the last two minutes or a GWG in the last 5 minutes...6 points if both occur
3 points for a win with a hat trick or the winning team scoring more than 5 goals
2 points for any other win in regulation
1 point for an OT win or shootout win.

subtract 2 points from the above, or give the losing team -2 points if the team employs the trap.

I figured it out:

Keep the exact same point system but take the "third" point that isn't given out in games that end in regulation and have the NHL keep those. Then at the end of the season the league splits those points between teams that it owns or teams in large media markets that it wants in the playoffs.

This way games are all worth the same amount of points, higher tv ratings in the playoffs, and the franchises that are owned by the league will raise in value. Win, win, win. :)

I think you should get an extra point if you have a sold out crowd! Suck it, Phoenix!

I forgot to add that this point system is cumulative...so a 2-0 shutout win where the first goal is scored with 4 minutes remaining in the 3rd followed by an ENG in the last minute would garner 11 points.

Two things I want to see:

1) All games worth (cumulatively) the same amount of points.
2) All wins worth the same amount of points.

The first rules out the current system and the "3 for win, 1 for tie, 0 for loss" sytem while the second rules out the "3-2-1-0" sytems I've heard bandied about. Basically I'd like to see them either keep the current system but eliminate loser points, or bring ties back.

Hard to argue with this logic. Well done, sending it to Gary.

My problem with this is 2 things.
1. For the casual fan like me, this is way too complicated to follow.
2. (using this year standings)What If Pittsburgh played At Washington and Montreal played at Ottawa on the last game of the year. Pittsburgh wins 6-2 scoring all 6 goal in the 1st. Montreal wins 2-0 on a Goal that should have been disallowed at the 18:25 mark in the 3rd period, and then they add an empty netter at 19:19.

Montreal gets 11 point for a 2-0 win over Ottawa yet Pittsburgh gets only 3 points for a 6-2 win over Washington? That just is wrong IMO.

This point system is infallable and simple. Can't argue with it. Just deal. :p

There are some topics I stay away from. I dont like talking about who should be centering on the Flyers, and I dont like this one.

I like the current system. You deserve a point for making it to OT, it isn't like you didnt show up and lost 15-0.

A win on the road should be 3 pts
A win at home should be 2 pts.
A weekend win on the road should be 4 Pts
A weekend win at home should be 3 Pts.
A win in the front of a B2B game should be 1 Pt, 2 Pts if on the road
A win in the back of a B2B should be 2 pts, ! pt if it's home.
Winter Classic wins should be worth 5 pts.

All games should have shootout regardless of the score and the team that wins the shootout gets an additional 7 pts.
