In my opinion, aside from starting pitcher, 3B is the most compelling and most important position for the Pirates this year. This is basically the year Alvarez has to show something. If he does, awesome, and the Pirates will have a decent offense. If he doesn't, I guess we'll have to hope McGehee has a bounceback season.
I'm cautiously optimistic about Alvarez, though. I think he's made the right decisions this offseason, and as Illinest pointed out in another thread, working out with Boras means he probably did a lot of things which should make him a better hitter, since Boras is not going to stand idly by and watch a client of his blow an opportunity at big money.
I'm going to say Alvarez is our everyday third baseman all season.

I'm also looking for about 25-30 home runs from him.
It's not a superstar line again, but it's a good line, and I think above average for a third baseman, and it's certainly better than what we got from the position last year.
