In my opinion, aside from starting pitcher, 3B is the most compelling and most important position for the Pirates this year. This is basically the year Alvarez has to show something. If he does, awesome, and the Pirates will have a decent offense. If he doesn't, I guess we'll have to hope McGehee has a bounceback season.

I'm cautiously optimistic about Alvarez, though. I think he's made the right decisions this offseason, and as Illinest pointed out in another thread, working out with Boras means he probably did a lot of things which should make him a better hitter, since Boras is not going to stand idly by and watch a client of his blow an opportunity at big money.

I'm going to say Alvarez is our everyday third baseman all season.

.260/.350/.450

I'm also looking for about 25-30 home runs from him.

It's not a superstar line again, but it's a good line, and I think above average for a third baseman, and it's certainly better than what we got from the position last year.

We all know how I feel about Pedro. I think at the first sign of adversity he will fold. I expect nothing from him and I don't really think the front office does either, otherwise there is no reason to pick up McGehee. Say what you will about the first base platoon, McGehee is here for one reason only, to take over when Pedro fails.

Needless to say, I expect McGehee to be our starting third baseman for the majority of the season and I don't expect a lot of offense overall from the position.

Overall I will say 240, 280, 400.

I think close to what darkstone posted. 250 / 340/ 450 = 790.

I dont think that pedro has an attitude problem (any more than your average young guy with an attitude that is) and i dont think he has irreperable holes in his swing. I think he needs to be timing the pitches right and at a minimum hes a mark reynolds type. I also think theres cause for optimism that hell be able to maintain a higher ba than reynolds.

I still think he will be a K machine, but I expect his power to be a factor, this season. 25 to 30 home-runs, and 70-80 RBI's.

His power is what needs to come around. He's going to strike out, just part of the package. But he needs to be hitting extra bases more consistently. I'm optimistic he'll have a good, not great, year. But I've been optimistic far too many times about Pirates players.

Here anything is an upgrade.

The best scenario would be Alvarez playing every day putting up numbers like 2010.

I think it will be a platoon at 1B and 3B with 3B combined being:

245/325/460
