In the Giants 10 losses so far, they have allowed a whopping 66 runs, an average of 6.6 runs per game.

In the Giants 10 wins so far, they have allowed only 18 runs, an average of 1.8 runs per game.

In the Giants 10 losses so far, they have scored 36 runs, an average of 3.6 runs per game.

In the Giants 10 wins so far, they have scored 48 runs, an average of 4.8 runs per game.

Given up 84 runs, scored 84 runs, record is 10-10.

Is the problem the offense, the defense, the pitching, or much too early to tell? I thought we are a better team than 10-10, and continue to believe so.

Also, in the 10 losses, the Giants have committed 18 errors.

In the 10 wins, the Giants have committed 6 errors.

(It seems that one error had been changed from an error to a hit, but I don't remember which game that was. The Giants have officially committed 23 errors. That probably doesn't change the obvious disparity.)

OK, Captain Obvious says, you score more, you give up less, you play good defense, you are going to win. Thank you.

You can't be giving up 6.6 runs a game and expect to win... so I'd say that has (surprisingly) been the main problem. But I don't think that it will continue to be a problem... This team is better than 11-10 and I think this will be proven out over the next month.

Anyway the pitching is coming around, and then the biggest problem will be the defense (which i also hink will come around) Offense is the least of our worries (woah!)

Over the last 10 games, the Giants pitching has been stellar. I expect that to continue for most of the rest of the season.

I don't get the shoddy defense. Just weird. You look at the guys we have in the field, and this should be an above average defense.

As for the hitting, I like what I'm seeing, but batting under .200 with runners in scoring position is a concern. We got more speed this year, but we still aren't doing the little things that get to move runners. To be honest, I'm not sure what to expect with the offense going forward. Better than last year (how could it not be?), but if we don't get better production from the 5th/6th spots, we might continue to score runs.

That's just it, CC. Last year, the Giants' putrid offense batted .219 with RISP. This year its is like .191. We may hit better and get more men on base, but if we cannot drive them in, what's the difference? Still early in the season, and a SSS. But this RISP is a growing concern.

The difference is despite the crappy risp* number we are still scoring more runs. Are we not? That's really the only difference that matters.

2011 = 3.51 runs per game

2012 = 3.56 runs per game (through 32 games)

Yup, we are scoring a lot more runs per game in 2012.

I look at it like this.....what can be fixed most easily? For me, it's the defense. And It's not just the outright errors guys are committing, players are out of position, not backing up bases, throwing to the wrong base, and miscommunicating on flyballs. It seems like the defense has led directly to about 5 losses. How many of those "should" the Giants have won? You'd think about 3. I'm going to keep hammering this theme: this is bochy's worst coaching effort since he's been with the Giants.

As for the lack of hitting, I'm not sure there is anything that can done about that without an infusion of talent. The pitching? Overall they've been solid. Some of those losses where they "gave up" 6+ runs were the result of 5 and 6 out innings.

I'm too lazy to look it up but on the radio they said we are giving up the same number of earned runs as last year, but far more unearned ones, and that's basically the difference in how we look as a team.

Yes two weeks after my initial post - (they were averaging over 4 a game through April) without Pablo with a slumping Posey and no production from 2b, the offense has gone shitty. :hand:

Crawford already has more errors than last year, in half the innings played. I watched Crawford play in SJ a couple years ago and he was unbelievable. Fast, great glove, soft hands, great arm. His play reminded me of Omar Vizquel. I am shocked at what has happened so far this year. WTF happened?

1) Yipps

2) Errors is a HORRIBLE stat.

Both of these contribute.

From the games that I have seen (which is far less than any year in recent memory so far - grain of salt), it looks like a lack of focus to me. This could be due to anything: thinking about struggles at the plate, worrying about making the spectacular play (the errors that I have seen seemed mostly routine), complications with a minor injury or something I know absolutely nothing about.

I agree that it is perplexing, and an issue that no one saw as a problem this season (with Crawford, at least). I'm still optimistic that he will turn it around. The most important thing to remember is that those errors are in the past, the Giants are a game above .500, Pablo will be back in a month and Matt Kemp just went on the 15-day DL. :D

I agree, but I've seen most of Craw's errors, and they were true errors (except one I saw in ARI which was a HUGE big hop due to the hard IF dirt that really wasn't an error). And I don't recall him getting many "well, that should have been an error" last year. He had range, and was (IMHO) more effective than either Tejada or Cabrera.
