I found this to be an interesting quick-and-dirty analysis of the effectiveness of the Pirates' amateur scouting team.

Pirates Prospects The Pirates Have Spent Big in the Draft, But Has it Paid Off?

Basically, they don't completely suck, but they suck a lot more than we can afford them to. Either that or our development team mega sucks.

The point is, sucking is happening, and it needs to stop. We spent $8 million per win earned so far from the 2008 draft, and that is just not good enough.

Agreed. Completely.

Tim's analysis is consistent with a lot of other commentary out there..... and supports a position I've been taking for the last 3 years: That is, Huntington and company comprise a decent front office, certainly better than Littlefield's..... but they're NOT GOOD ENOUGH to make a small market team like the Pirates consistently competitive. They've made some good moves, but have made too many mistakes as well, and that includes the draft (as well as trades, free agent signings, etc.).

Having read PirateProspects regularly (one of the best sources out there for such analyses, IMO, at least as good as anything coming out of the professional media), and having followed the debates at BucsDugout in detail, I'm not convinced either way about whether drafting or development is the primary culprit..... but it's pretty clear that, taken together, the Pirates' drafting and development just have not been good enough.

Put me down as one that thinks it is 100%von the development of our prospects. The only ones that seemto exceed expectations are the lower round draft picks who presumably have less upside and would likely get less attention, so continue to follow their own routine for the most part. Or at the very least they are the least tinkered with.

Yep couldn't agree more.
It is sad to think of the talent that could have been....

One of the most recent examples it Stetson Allie what a waste of a pick. I am SO curious to know what they tried to do with him prior to moving him off the mound?

Well this was brought up before but....

My only thought is what does this do to get any quality prospect ready to play baseball, except have a month of development lost.

Pirates Prospects The Real Story on the Navy SEAL Training Isn’t So Crazy

I think this will give some clarity to the "SEAL" training. I have said it before when the story first broke and I will say it again now, professional baseball players could not complete SEAL training. They may be able to perform some of the exercises, but I find it hard to believe that all but a select few could make it through a true "hell week".

However, to the real point, I agree, with all the actual glaring weaknesses in the development of our minor leaguers this training probably is useless.

Yea, the SEAL story got a little too much play, IMO. The fact that it was the Pirates doing it, and it seems there was some exaggeration in the initial reports.

I don't see it a fireable offense for NH, maybe Kyle Stark should be worried, but I think it was blown way out of proportion because its the Pirates and they collapsed two years in a row.

I agree about the SEAL story. It seems that Dejan enjoys "trolling" and this was a great example of it. Then the chumps on the fan join in with him and it's just nasty.

I could see Stark possibly being the fall guy, but it seems like they all are back for next year.

Oh yeah I bet that story got blown out of proportion. Outside of ever seeing it here I didn't know about it. And the link I sent I got out of a recent link on MLB Trade Rumors.

Anyway my only reason for mentioning was the fact if that truly cost a prospect time then they need to re-evaluate there programs.
Obviously what they are doing is not good in developing their players.
